Media training/spin 101. As perfected by politicians and corporations and as spoofed by comedies such as Yes Minister and Hollowmen.

Focus on the points you want to get across and the answers you want to give. Never say anything controversial and never give the answers the journalist is looking for which is anything they can pluck out, misconstrue and hang a story on.

a really good technique in answering any question in any forum is to buy time. Something short and simple such as "that's a good question"....it may only be a few seconds but for the brain and mouth it can be an eternity.

Considering how few "journos" actually ask questions these days, it's probably a more legitimate tactic to say nothing. When they ask you for a responses after an uncomfortable silence you can then say "Oh was that a question?" Most of them wouldn't know the difference. Making a statement, or a series of statements, then thrusting the mike across for a response is not really the same.

I wish Cathy Freeman did the media training for all AFL players - would make for much more interesting interviews. Some of hers were rippers....

I'm finding it really hard to listen to any of the recent interviews. The journalists are rubbish, ask repetitive, nonsense questions and stumble over their own ineptitude. Just listen to the one posted today with Brandon Jack. How is a player supposed to respond when they are asked ridiculous things to begin with?

Lance hates the media stuff, especially with so many gotcha so-called journalists out to get him. Captaincy would be a curse not a blessing.

That looked hastily put together, the interviewer seemed totally underprepared. Why the rush?
