Changes for Round 3 V GWS.

What kind of contest is this Ernie? GWS when they beat us, twice, have done it with outside run. they have used their pace and running game to dismantle us because on both those days we didn't have runners capable of shutting them down. Is Benny going to be able to shut their runners down? Hope so but... He certainly is not going to provide a contest in the air, which Towers can do, and Papley is now our designated small forward. Benny is good in and under but we have so many of his type who are much better players (they can actually kick a footy) it seems we are going back down the sameness road. I hope it doesn't backfire.

The type of contest I described in my post??.....High intensity, high pressure, and very physical....

The way to shut down their outside run, is to win the contested ball, and apply full on pressure when they have it....easier said than done I know.

The reason GWS beat us so convincingly in the NAB cup was because they were harder at it, won the contested footy, and they applied more pressure...

The outside run stems from that.

As I said in a later post, Benny has done some excellent shut down roles in the past, I suspect the Swans have a particular match up for him..We'll see.

I think towers was the first out based on the first 2 rounds. Just not sure anyone in that side deserved to be dropped.

I think Towers is dreadfully unlucky but it's a long season and he'll get plenty of senior opportunities, I see it as a positive for our squad depth at this point that someone who actually played quite well last week gets dropped. To be honest I think it also has a lot to do with how we want to man up against GWS and it's an indicator how we want to take the game to them

I was just thinking this week who is our tagger/stopper, this teams Crouch or Kirk? Do we not need one? I think there is still a place for this type of footballer. Is Benny our tagger? Mitchell was playing a role similar to this when he first got into the seniors but seems to have gone past that role. I think BJ has been given a chance to play this role but hadn't worked out.
Is Benny our stopper? I'd that why he is in the team?

BTW McGlynn is actually a pretty competitive mark. I am regularly surprised by the marks he takes, when playing.

You're right we don't really play with a tagger any more but if we need someone to shut down an opposing player that job still often goes to Tom Mitchell. In the future it might be Robinson who played a run with role for the majority of last year in the NEAFL and was quite effective.

GWS look less potent on the ball without Treloar. If there are any tags, there should be one on Shaw, as so much of their transition from defence goes through him. I would also give Lloyd a role of putting a soft tag on Scully, who has been their most dangerous runner so far.

In the Melbourne game, Max Gawn was happy to take on Mummy and nullified his influence. But the Geelong ruckmen weren't willing to compete with him, and that was the big difference in that game. One of the reasons I was against chasing Zac Smith is his lack of competitiveness at times. He was intimidated by Mummy. That won't happen with Tippo. Hopefully Sinclair will give him a challenge as well.

Rory Lobb has been a useful target up forward and on the wing for GWS. He's pretty hard to stop because of his height, but I think you can run him hard and tire him out. Patton doesn't look to have much chase in him either. We should be able to move the ball out of defence fairly easily, especially late in quarters.

Although they beat us handily in the NAB Challenge, I haven't been all that impressed with their 1st couple of games this year. But they are a talented side and we will have to be on our toes. If we continue to play like the past 2 weeks, we should win comfortably.

Ernie also did a great job picking the round 1 team nearly perfectly too, and well before the game happened. Will watch your future predictions with great interest and respect.

An interesting little point that I noticed: at the end of the short video on the Swans website about team selection, they have posted the team list which is slightly different to the one they ultimately went with - and Hewett was excluded in favour of Marsh! I wonder if this is just a stuff up or whether Marsh did in fact come very close to being selected for his debut? If the latter, I think and hope he'll be given another opportunity in the not too distant future. That said, I am delighted they are persisting with Hewett and giving him a decent run.

Can't wait for the footy to start. The week always drags between matches!

I've actually been a little surprised by how little the loss of Treloar looks to have impacted on them- Adam's an excellent player and a big loss, but they do seem like they're able to cover for it (which they'd want to be able to, I guess, with all those high draft picks!). I'm not sure if that's perhaps just a slightly skewed perception because they finished last season with Treloar but without Shiel, then have started this season with Shiel but without Treloar.

Yep, Kelly was one I was thinking of as showing a vast improvement- he's a wonderful player to watch, one of those gifted guys that just always seems to find a little more time than everyone else when he gets the ball in traffic. Scully has been just about the best outside mid in the comp for the first couple of rounds from the games I've seen.

Their depth of talent across the board really is remarkable.

ours is definitely moving towards a hybrid of our traditional contested style and Hawthorns deadly accurate entries to one on one leads

Fans are so fickle these days. I hear the sudden surge in Swans' memberships came from converted Collingwood fans after their round 1 thumping.

Lucky we're not playing the Giants at ANZ where the chances of losing to them would be greater.
