Not that I think "speed" is as important as other factors of the game like good, fast hands and a quick, accurate kick, but surely speed is just as important at the SCG as any where else. If someone decides to go for a run from the D50 a run, bounce, run and kick would put the ball well into the F50. And to state that it has any less impact on the SCG than other fields is almost akin to t@#%%$g.

I was scathing on Teddy last week and rightly so. For an experienced player he played like an amateur in the District leagues. What some of us seem to forget is this is their job and a job badly done is a job incomplete. But I must say Teddy answered his critics in a wonderful manner. But the thing I did notice is that generally he wasn't playing on a key forward, he was a loose man at one stage and played on a flanker at another. Rampe, Reg and due to Laids going off, Mills got the monsters. Teddy was allowed to be on his own across half back for the majority of the last three quarters. He was spectacular and cut Eagles off again and again. His mark and goal were gold.
As to the game. The Eagles play this rolling maul and then spread. In the first quarter we let them play the game on their terms. sometime during the second quarter we decided to change our play and it worked. We created more space and didn't match their numbers at stoppages. This counted for a lot as we were able to get the ball out far easier and had runners ready to strike. The other thing is if they got it out we also had players behind the ball, Lloydy was one, ready to pick them off. Early in the third we again allowed them to play their game and got sucked in a bit. But by mid third we were opening play and running the ball again. this style of play, the open and quick kick & handball suits our playing list now. Fast, accurate kicking, hard in yesterday's conditions, will always win games. Pressure, pressure, pressure, cause the turnover and punish them on the rebound. Wonderful footy played under dreadful conditions, the ball must have been like a soap bar to the players. There was a lot of slipping and sliding too. I wonder about the new boots in these conditions. I don't think they can be much good if the players keep slipping and sliding. Hardly ever happened in studs. The boots the players use (all moulded soles) were originally designed for soccer where there is less movement of the body.
Impressed with our younger players. Papley was on a mission yesterday after his modest display against the Crows. Hewett was slow to start but his third quarter was really impressive. some of his kicks and his ability to find space, have time to weigh up the options and pick the right one shows true maturity. Mills was very good,. Harry played a great role of negating Jetts and then all other comers. Heens was not as dominant as last week but his ability to corral and pressure caused several turnovers. Parks & Mitchell are just top liners. Our mids are fearsome for opposition sides now. The set ups are really good and Francou is doing a great job there. In fact I think the whole panel has got it right. such a great balanced game plan that can change when needed, unlike before.Comment

Well that was a bit of fun. You just don't know who is going to pop up as the good guy when another is down a bit. Thats a strong distinction with our mob. In general they cover for each other when needed. Sometimes I think the fact gets lost in translation when someone has a negating roll and isn't noticed in dispatches (Red and White ones) therefore is deemed to have played a crap game and should be shot. Who was on Priddis? His influence was low.
Everyone of those boys to men were terrific. Especially as we were playing with a man down. Just have to fine tune some of the kiddies and oh my...... I do love Benny tho. And Ted.If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhoodComment

great win. loved Papley's 2nd quarter. people went to early with knocking teddy. He was awesome . Frankly if laidler is out I would like to see Allir given a go.Comment

He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)Comment

So typical of the media (and many of our supporters) making a mountain out a mole hill. Almost every ex-player gets booed when they are the opposition, especially when they're kicking for goal. It's a fact, and a fact that I don't want removed from the game for the sake of political correctness. Anyone who thinks it has no place in our game should start going to polo games and tennis matches.

I couldn't believe it when I heard it on the radio. Disgraceful. Maybe a bit of a boo when he's lining up on a shot at goal to put him off can be understood but it sounded like it was a lot more than that.Comment

I was disappointed too, though maybe not totally surprised.
At the ground it sounded muted, coming from just a few areas of the ground but still audible. I don't think I heard anyone around my area booing - indeed many were looking around in surprise to see if they could see anyone contributing. Hopefully the few Sydney fans who thought it warranted have now got it out of their systems'.
To those who say it's part of the game, maybe it is. But it's a part of the game that reflects poorly on those who choose to participate, regardless of why they are booing. I think aardvark summed up why perfectly.Comment
