Had to laugh when SEN radio saying how sad it would be for Eddie McGuire to quit the presidency of Collingwood. Quoting all the wonderful things he has done for the game??? He has tried to destroy just about every interstate side. He only looks at Victorian sides and the rest can rot on hell. I for one will not be unhappy to see him go.

When McGuire goes, nothing surer, he will be sniping from the sidelines like Kennett.

It take a brave person in the media to step on the toes of the biggest media mogul in football. You never know when you might need a job. I think most people think he's a fool, be a powerful fool, and are loathe to take him on. He loves taking credit from lifting Collingwood up from the bottom 18 years ago. But if you do that you also should take the blame for where Collingwood find themselves today. He's had success by using his high profile, particularly in the media, to get what he wants. But he's put off a lot a people along the way. Just because someone is rich and has a big public persona doesn't mean they should be admired. No person could have offended so many people and still find himself a club president. I've never like his style and think he's been terrible for football.

I'm in two minds about whether him leaving Collingwood is a good or bad thing. Better the devil you know and all that.

I reckon he'll weasel himself onto the Commission inside 12 months and if we think we have been the victim of some unfair bans and policies in the past few years, we may have seen nothing yet.

Even tho he is loud and obnoxious now, he may go to a whole new level wearing his media hat knowing he can no longer be accused of a conflict of interest, not that it really seems those accusations have unduly worried him in the past.

Triple B - Good point!! I almost forgot. If he quit Collingwood and with all his media contacts, he be a shoe in for an AFL commission and then he would really extract revenge on Sydney. No more Isaac Heeney stories. No more academy .Just Sydney sitting winless on the bottom of the ladder. On second thought I hope he stays.

No matter how much influence he has, and how it is probably in the interest of the northern clubs for him to stay with the Pies, continued failure by Collingwood will dictate that his time is up. Low crowds, supporter disatisfaction (social media plays a role now), AFL pressure (yes, because they need a successful Collingwood) and continued media pressure and speculation will see him ousted or fall on his sword. He might just prolong his tenure by orchestrating Buckley's sacking. They are in dire straits and it is usually the coach who cops the blame. This is a fascinating time at Collingwood for club outsiders. It will be very interesting to observe the squirming, wriggling and rhetoric in the second half of the season. I suspect a large part of their supporter base will call for Buckley's head in the not too distant future. Will the FIGJAM moniker be resurrected soon.

In an earlier post I said that I believe Eddie would not be the president who makes the decision on Buckley. He has been in the job for 18 years. Why would Eddie go through the pain with someone he loves and admires in Buckley.

As a potential AFL commissioner Eddie would find new enemies. Those new enemies would be the other three football codes. He would realise that the AFL market is saturated in Victoria, SA and WA and would look to new growth in NSW and Qld. He would realise that academy's attached to local AFL clubs are essential to growing the market in NSW and Qld. He would then support the academies.

People in new jobs emotionally move on from their previous jobs. If Eddie was on the commission he would emotionally move on from Collingwood and focus all energy on the best interests of the AFL. He emotionally moved on from Network 10 where he worked earlier in his career.

I actually think Eddie's influence is rather overstated.

And I think that if the academy situation ever comes to a head that we'll have a bit more support than we think. The WA and SA clubs don't have any major issues to the scheme I believe. Probably because they effectively build their own home grown lists and they know how important it is.

Eddie's campaign only really gets traction at the Melbourne clubs who are in a battle to the death in a market that cannot sustain the current number of clubs.

I'm pretty confident that the academy system is here to stay. Think about it, they represent a combined population of 12 million people, well over 50% of our national population. And I think that the Academy clubs have banded together in a pact that whilst the recent changes have been accepted as being reasonably fair that any future challenge will be met with legal action on a restraint of trade basis.

And I'd support this. If we can't have the academy system to support our clubs and the game, when the clear advantages other clubs have are not available to us, then we may as well pack up our bags and go home because the system will be so bloody corrupt that it won't be worth playing in. It's that important and I expect it it to be defended to the absolute death if required.
