Can't believe Foote was last selection (Round 9) of the 2014 Rookie draft. I'm under the impression that no one bid for him so we were allowed to use our last pick? They passed a couple of times before taking Jordan

Watch a giraffe run. Legs slow. Animal surprisingly quick. It's about the biomechanics of lever arm. Similarly, Look at big wheeled & small wheeled bikes. Long legs/big wheels - slow to start but fast once they're in motion.

I believe it's a rookie draft pre-selection if they aren't bid on in the national draft.

I've just done a bit of a comparison of the two sides to see how experienced they are. The games played profile of the two sides will be pretty similar.

Sydney has three players with over 200 games, the Blues two (including the most experienced player picked for either side, in Simpson).

Sydney then has a group of three players with 150-200 games, while the Blues have none. But they have five players in the 100-150 game range, to Sydney's lone Parker.

Sydney has nine players with fewer than 50 games experience to the Blues' 11 but, of those, only two have fewer than 10 games, compared to four in the Sydney side.

This is a massive game for the Swans. I truly believe based on our experience this year we are doing really well. Exciting times ahead.

I'm always pleased when someone battles their way from the rookie list into the top side. So go Foote, kick some Carlton arse.

You must really love the side we have named then. Exactly half started their career on the rookie list.

That is one young side we're putting out there. What a credit to the coaching staff that we're going as well as we are with such a young (in senior footy experience terms) team.

I feel for Ted though. What a brilliant clubman he has been for us over the years. I hope this isn't it for him.

Looking fwd to see what X can do across Half fwd, hopefully he has a tank like everyone is saying. For us the challenge for a GF that is the line we need most help at with Reid out.
Teddy unlucky as a club great but that role wasn't going to be long term, he is a victim of Alir's growth

I rate HC, he is like Rohan in that he gets thrown around way too much.
Horse has seen over the last few weeks what happens when you give Rohan 1 role, hopefully he can give HC a role. I reckon a tagging HFF, to sit on Simpson, he can run, mark and kick goals.

Put Heeney down back behind the ball and give Mills a go in the middle

The omissions of Ted and Benny make sense from a form / available position perspective, but you can imagine that the coaches would have thought long and hard about dropping both once McVeigh was ruled out. It is certainly a huge vote of confidence in the development systems within the club that they are prepared to go in with such an inexperienced team when there are a couple of old heads available for selection. There's no reason why the team can't deliver, as there are decent amounts of experience on each line, but there might be an issue if Reg or Rampe got injured early in a game. With Ted up forward, you'd just swing him back and rely on Buddy to organise the smaller players together into a functioning forward line. But while X can certainly be swung back if needed, he can't be relied upon to organise the back line (the part of the ground where organisation is probably the most critical).

There's a piece in the SMH/Age today about X usurping Ted in the team. X admits he's let Ted know about it (in a way he couldn't do if Ted was just another team mate) but also backs him to play good footy in the NEAFL and get back into the senior side at some stage. X also reveals the secret to his rapid transformation into a forward within the NEAFL team, having barely played there throughout his junior or senior career. He just asks himself "what would Buddy or Goodsey do" and tries to do the same.

Yes, I think it's something of a testament to the management skills of the club. That is, taking players who may not have been the most naturally talented at junior level and turning them into high class, professional athletes.

It is getting a bit worrying now - Rd 18 you would like to have your best side settled (or at least very close to it) - instead we're introducing another debutant and a KPP with 2 games experience.

It's fine earlier in the season to reward good reserves form at the expense of ideal team balance, but now is the time to replace like-for-like in case the same is needed for finals.

Messing around with the likes of Cunningham, Rohan or Heeney across HB isn't the right option when we could have tested out Newman in that role.

Persevering with an experienced and versatile player like McGlynn, and trying to run him into form against the likes of Carlton and Freo, is a better option for our finals campaign than giving a guy like Foote 1 or 2 games and then banished for the rest of the year.

We've done remarkably well so far give the youth that has played, but we can't expect the senior players to carry us into finals in the same way.

Can't help but fear it may be, despite the media "he'll be back" spin. We know he considered retirement after the recent concussion and he hasn't looked great on return, aside from the brief forward cameo in Geelong.

Then again if he's fit and we go deep into finals, who would you want in the backline...

No doubt the AFL will be banning rookie lists soon. ????????????

Out. McVeigh, McGlynn and Richards. Who'd have thought we'd ever see that. Welcome to the future. The interesting thing for me will be how much effect McVeigh missing has on the organisation of the back line.

Chris Yarran (now of Richmond/formerly Carlton) is a good example. He goes on these 50M runs out of the backline and appears to be not moving particularly fast, yet no one can ever catch him. I always thought Greg Williams looked like he was walking most of the time with the ball (whilst yelling at his teammates telling them where to run to), but always seemed to get rid of it in time. I think there are a few aspects to this fast player / slow player thing.
