I think some change is in order and will be coming next year (maybe to begin in 2018). There are many gradations in changing the status of rookies and I don't have a strong opinion on any of them. I can see the point of the AFLPA, but think that some aspects of the rookie status offer a good balance between opportunity for the player and marginal cost for the club.

I like the idea of having some 1st year players starting on a one year contract. If we went to an immediate change to a 2 year starting contract for all, then it would cause a bottleneck for players coming in the year following the rule change as lists would be difficult to trim.

The players' association actually want the term of draftee contracts to be increased from two to three years. Haven't read of any sympathetic words from the AFL on that though.

I imagine any change in this area could be phased in however. (For example, changes to rules around payment of 'veterans' has been transitioned.)

Very recent words from McLachlan re future of rookie.

"Nothing will happen for next year, but there are different looks at how list management might work and how the list might be composed," McLachlan said.

"I know the abolition of the rookie list has been in that discussion. If it happens, or whatever happens, won't happen until 2018 I think."

I would think Xav stays on next year after showing a bit up forward. Hope Nankervis gets another contract too but is seemingly our 4th ruckmen when all are fit so might look for opportunities elsewhere. I thought Towers would have done enough to earn a contract extension but might useful at the trade table. Mitchell most likely gone too.

Is Abe Davis out of contract?

Spot on with your assessment. Alex has signed a one year contract Luckless Swan Alex Johnson earns new deal - AFL.com.au
Hope that his knee operation is successful this time and he will be back playing again for the club in 2017.

From that original list it looks like only these 4 are outstanding.
(unless, of course, they already have expiry dates after this year.)

Foote and Marsh signed for another year.

I like Murray but maybe too attacking for seniors.

I think it is a fair point made by the AFLPA to be honest and provided the cap space is raised by a sufficient amount I can't see any major issue.

What I could see is that fifth or sixth round onwards draft picks may well be one year with an additional option at the club's discretion. Us stacking our rookie list this year is a good idea with this change looming

Sort it by contract, and you'll get the list.

Heeney, Kennedy, Reid and Jones are probably the biggest names on there.

                            1 James Rose 2017
                            2 Alex Johnson 2017
                            3 Jarrad McVeigh 2017
                            5 Isaac Heeney 2017
                            10 Zak Jones 2017
                            12 Josh Kennedy 2017
                            20 Sam Reid 2017
                            30 Tyrone Leonardis 2017
                            32 Michael Talia 2017
                            33 Brandon Jack 2017
                            34 Jordan Dawson 2017
                            38 Colin O?Riordan 2017

1 James Rose 2017 - could be important
2 Alex Johnson 2017 - shouldn't matter, if he makes his way back, can't see him leaving the Swans
3 Jarrad McVeigh 2017 - will either retire or stick around for a 1 yr deal
                            5 Isaac Heeney 2017 - most important
10 Zak Jones 2017 - probably very important
                            12 Josh Kennedy 2017 - most important
20 Sam Reid 2017 - could go either way as far as importance goes
                            30 Tyrone Leonardis 2017 - who knows
                            32 Michael Talia 2017 - who knows
33 Brandon Jack 2017 - unless he does something this year, he's gawn
                            34 Jordan Dawson 2017 - who knows
                            38 Colin O?Riordan 2017 - who knows

I have to agree with Cure on Heeney, Kennedy and Jones. All top priorities. They all seem happy in Sydney so unless we cannot offer them comparable to elsewhere we should keep all three of them. Reid will be interesting to watch given his lack of availability.

My guess is that re-signing Heeney and Kennedy will be top priority as soon as the TPP for the coming years is known. And at least for Heeney, probably a multi-year contract, Kennedy probably a further three years.
