        They're 2 different case studies.

Buddy was going out with Jesinta Campbell at the time who's based in Sydney and he had a $10 million dollar carrot dangling in front of him.

Tom Derickx was an unwanted delisted free agent at the time, he had nowhere else to go.

This is from the HeraldSun: "THE Sydney Swans are aiming to use the draft to bolster their midfield talent in the trade period and add a back-up ruckman after the departures of Tom Mitchell and Toby Nankervis. But football manager Tom Harley says the club's plan is to use their early picks simply on the best player available and look after any specific needs with later selections."

The 2013 draft is a good example of this strategy. We went into the draft needing a KPD and to develop another ruckman as the feeling must have been that Naismith was far from a certainty. We passed on several opportunities to get that KPD, going for Jones with our first pick and then Hewett, who was considered a good talent, when he slipped to our next pick. Then went for Nanka and Aliir for positional needs.

Competitiveness and toughness have always been key criteria in our drafting, which is why we picked Jones and Nanka. I think that goes a long way in deciding who the best available player is. That's one reason we probably rank Logue and Berry very highly for our first pick. I think Simpkin, Gallucci and SPP will rate highly in those areas as well and should be targets for pick 19.

There is a general misconception from outsiders that the loss of Tom Mitchell puts a hole in our midfield, but that is not at all the case. The top level quality of our midfield brigade is very strong and quite young as well. We just need to keep bringing in new talent to challenge for spots, like Robbo and Foote are doing now. Unless we pull a surprise and take someone like Josh Battle with pick 19, we should add another good player to the midfield group.

The emergence of Aliir has really taken the pressure of our backline stocks but I just feel that we'll find Logue as a potential elite backman hard to pass up given that he ticks all the boxes re "best player available" anyway. And I don't tend to share the fear re the go home factor for us - any kid will be joining a club with a great culture and on field success not to mention living in one of the world's great cities. As a first rounder I think they qualify for a three year deal which gives us plenty of time to mould him into Reg's long term successor and potentially long term partner to Allir. If he's good and he wants to go home then we get a first rounder for him and don't really lose on the deal, if he isn't that good then we don't lose out as much.

You can't have enough good mids but I'm pretty confident whoever goes at 11 will be close to a top 10 pick in other years and we'll get a good one. Having said that if we miss Logue I'd be happy with Berry or Taranto.

And I agree about of midfield, I think Mills will be a better midfielder than Mitchell by the end of next year

I keep changing my mind on who my preference would be out of these 3. I'm with you. I'll be happy with any of them, and Scrimshaw too, although I doubt he will be there at our pick.

tlock is new here so we can't expect him/her to appreciate the contribution Tom Derickx has made to the Swans. And if not to the Swans, then at least to RWO. And if not to RWO, then at least to Ludwig's psychiatrist.

Only 17 daze until all is revealed.

Every year a heap of players read well in their reviews and many of them just don't produce at AFL level so no guarantees - but this year there seems to be a lot more depth and much more uncertainty about likely draft ranges for players. A good year to have a top 10 and a top 20 pick, we'll get quality at both picks.

The 40s picks this year are more likely to produce AFL players than 40s picks in previous drafts. Hoping for a Parker or AJ with these :-) Will be good viewing, already locked into my diary!

I just read the article. Hope he gets picked up, it'll be interesting to see whether he can push for senior selection

Bombers are pretty well served for KPP and 3rd talls back and forward. I suspect he'll be in a similar position to what he was with us, a handy back up when injuries hit

My thoughts exactly. It might show up just how thin our KPF stocks are when he can't get a run in the starting 22 of worse teams (whether it is Essendon or anyone else)

If I had a choice between a player who 'isn't fazed if he get picked up or not' (Xavier ) or a player 'who is busting a gut to play AFL again' (Josh Green) I know which one I would pick. Best of luck to both players.
