But, special circumstances seem to be the dominant reason why they want to go home. Copy cat stuff perhaps?

Being back home with extended family and children is significant in my personal opinion

I loved being near my family when our little one was young and they loved it too

Heard that Essendon will not offer XR a contract. So where does that leave him? Playing VFL football in the suburbs.. Its a big price to pay for a bit of home sickness.

Jonathon Marsh has also retired after leaving Collingwood with home sickness! Seems to be a lot of it going around!

All of these retirements / go home scenarios are sending a repeated warning to recruiters ... don't touch the W.A. lads. It can happen to anyone from any state, but there has been a cluster of them.

I've been saying for a long time that this is the greatest inequity in football and the AFL have done nothing to address this problem. It's been particularly harsh on the Northern clubs who have some parts of the draft pool effectively cut off.

I've got no problem with people wanting to be close to family and friends. There is the WAFL and SANFL for those who want to put family first. For the others, there is a national competition. If you want to pull a Cam McCarthy or a Jarrod Garlett, fine, but you should then forever barred from playing in the AFL. It's their choice.

I know we are interested in Griffin Logue. He seems to be the kind of person who wouldn't be wedded to being in Perth. But of course due diligence is required.

And we all thought that being with family and playing on a wide ground was going to finally see him hit his straps. LOL.

I think the difference with WA is the number of indigenous players that originate from there. Indigenous players have a heavier reliance on family, especially the ones from remote areas. That's why I'd stay clear of them in the draft. If they're from cities and large towns it's a little different.

Jonathan Marsh - Harry Marsh's brother just got released from his Collingwood contract so he can return to WA due to home sickness. Will Harry Marsh follow in his brother's foot steps one day?

Of course, the problem with some players getting home sick, is a fundamental reason why our academies are important. That is, instead of burning a draft pick on someone who scarpers after a year or two, we get a higher return on our investment, because a player developed by us, would have both a ready made loyalty to the club and greater promotional value in the local market.

Pies defender retires to return home to WA - AFL.com.au

would be a handy pick up with his speed and height

but i am guessing he is not allowed to play for anyone but the Pies in 2017 ?

Half the population of WA is called Marsh.

I bet you wouldn't be so uncharitable if it was NSW boys from the academy wanting to be back home with their family. And for the Swans building a home grown list has to be a priority for that very reason. At the same time you want us to be able to build a home grown list you try and stop the WA and SA clubs doing the same, even though they don't get the academy benefits we do. Instead you want to impose a draconian employment condition ("forever barred from playing in the AFL", are you really serious?). Your attitude reeks of hypocrisy and double standards and a sense of entitlement given how outraged you are at the slightest threats to our ability to recruit via the academy.

Surely the whole idea of bringing in the WA and SA clubs in the first place was to develop the game there and surely the idea was to give their local players an opportunity in their home states. As it is, their elite talent often goes interstate and they have to recruit from interstate themselves (Judd and go home factor anyone, though I agree the drug culture was probably part of the problem).

None of the SA/WA clubs have a homegrown content over 50% as it is and whenever a player wants a trade back they are labelled sooks. And for every WA boy that wants to go home there are just as many if not more that don't (O'Meara, Buddy and Hogan to name a few) I just find the hysteria on here about it ridiculous and OTT.

McCarthy didn't "pull" anything. I think he was (and may still be) a very unwell young man and being close to his family is obviously a huge issue, anyone with an ounce of empathy should see that. I do agree that the trend of demanding a move mid contract (like Bryce with three years to go) is a bad one. As long as players honour their contracts and give it 100% then they should be able to play wherever they want. And clubs should also be prepared to hold firm and demand a suitable trade like Gold Coast did.

I am very surprised that no one has offered X a contract as yet. He did show a lot of potential this season despite putting in a shocker in the GF along with a few others.

Disagree with your position in general mug. Lots of professional sports or vocations need a greater sacrifice than afl.

How would you go as a pro tennis player wanting to stay in Perth? Soccer? Want to be an actor you move. Comedian you move.

You don't want the heat then stay out of the kitchen. If you want the rewards of the game then potentially living away from family is part of it.
