Its our recruiters obsession to try every draft to undercover some hidden gem no one else has seen.

It totally bull, if a player has not been too an academy or played at the highest level in the colts, he is no good!

Sam Murray last year, hasn't been seen, Ryan this year

The amount of work and money to try and make them even NEAFL standard is a totally disgrace.

AG - I agree. I'm not convinced that we need another tall defender on our books. I am not among those touting particularly for Logue, especially since there is every chance someone even better might be available at that pick. I would much rather see us snaffle Scrimshaw, SPS or possibly even Perryman if they were available. Anyway, just because RWO and the meeja think we might take Logue doesn't mean much. Except that the other people that matter wouldn't be buying into the hype either, it would probably suit us to have everyone thinking that. Most especially we don't want the Suns to know where our true interest lies because they have the draft picks to thwart us if they care.

Cosmic Wizard, I don't think our recruiters deserve this panning. They are not looking for "some hidden gem no one else has seen". They do sometimes take a punt on someone who has more potential and less proven ability, for instance because they are one of the youngest players in the pool (like Hewett) or are very raw (Melican). Never mind the undoubted successes like Hanners, Parker or (going back a ways) Goodes. In any event, they are working with the picks they have. It's not like they are ignoring better talent on those selections. As for Murray, it's way too soon to rule him out. He's had a good year. Plus, he was a rookie pick - and generally you can't expect that a rookie selection will ever get a game, when they do it's a bonus. And we've had a great record with our rookie selections. Finally, you are overlooking our successes with unheralded talent like Papley or, going back a couple of years, Aliir (who most other recruiters apparently didn't really rate). I really don't get where you are coming from.

The recruiters will have their work cut out for them in assessing a number of the draftees this year, with several of the top candidates missing parts of the year due to injury. It also makes for a lot of uncertainty as some players who would have expected to go higher at the start of season, like Simpkin and Witherden, may slip down the draft order.

I wonder how Beatson rates Logue. Considering the limited amount of football he's played, I think his improvement has been impressive. I don't think you can rate him as your ordinary KPD. He has the pace and athleticism of some of the best players in this draft and I don't see any reason why he couldn't be a key forward of the Nick Riewoldt variety. If that's the case, we would certainly rate him a steal at pick 9.

The landscape has changed in respect to the value of player positions. KP forwards don't seem to have the influence they once had, while so much depends on generating attack from the backline that the value of defenders has risen in recent times. So perhaps so of the old formulas on drafting don't apply to the modern game.

Jarrod Berry has slipped a lot due to a mediocre year caused by a series of injuries. But he showed his class in the Combine where he was the best performed player and scored well in just about every category. His dedication and leadership also have to be valued highly. I would have him in the mix at pick 9 and a steal if available at pick 19.

Daniel Venables was also rated a top 10 pick until he too was slowed down by a series of injuries this year. But he could well be one the picks of the draft. I would love to see him available at pick 19, but I doubt he will be there.

Don't know enough about most in the draft but we need a player at Pick 9 that can give us 15+ Games next year.
From all reports Logue can do that, id give him the Mills role and throw Mills in the Middle more.

English is definitely not the way to go, he is a few years away, we have 3 rucks not sure how many we are supposed to have ??
And he is a West Aussie, 2 years in the NEAFL and he is gone

I'd be really surprised if we went for Logue - unless you're talking about a Weitering type, historically there are far more misses than hits trying to draft key defenders with those mid-range 1st round picks.

Given we're almost certain to be able to get one of Scrimshaw, Taranto or Brodie at No.9, I don't think you could go past them. I'd suspect that Scrimshaw is our priority, although he will probably go earlier with everyone falling in love with the Bontempelli-type tall midfielder.

Then we'd be hoping that one of Simpkin or Gallucci fall through to No.19, and if not either of them, maybe one of Berry, Venables or Florent. If they're all gone by No.19 it would mean there's a high chance Todd Marshall would still be available, and whilst he doesn't seem to have really done much, his upside is considerable and worth taking a punt if all our preferred midfielders are gone.

I reckon we'd also be hoping for Jack Graham to fall through to our third pick, somewhat in the Luke Parker mold, although that's probably very unlikely now given that's in the mid-3rd round.

wonder who the category B might be ?

interestingly that KB said he may take two midfielders with our top two picks if a Luke Parker situation occurred again

Tom Harley said something similar: we'd draft best available at 9 & 19 and look for talls at 46 & 49.
KB didn't rule out taking a tall at 9

WASwan Logue is also a West Australian. I would rate our greatest need as a KPF which is perhaps why the club tried to convert both the Richards brothers into Tall Forwards last year with very mixed success. With them plus Nankervis, Davis and Derickx all gone and no real tall promoted from the rookie list we definitely are short of talls. I would take English at pick 9 if still there and would be happy with Logue also. There will be good mids still available at 19.

The worst outcome for our first pick is for Bowes not to get a bid and Freo pass on Tim English. Then we might see the first 8 picks going something like McCluggage, McGrath, Ainsworth, Taranto, SPS, Brodie, Logue and Scrimshaw. So including Academy players Setterfield and Bowes we could miss out on one of the top 10 players in the draft.

It's not the end of the world, but the choices might come down to Oliver Florent, Jarrod Berry, Jy Simpkin or Daniel Venables. It's such a good draft that a star can be picked anywhere in the top 25.

I wouldn't mind getting the 2 boys from Halls Creek in SPS and Cedric Cox. We'd be a super exciting team, especially with Buddy in the mix.

Cat B, given the rapid development of O'Riordan, I wonder if we've got an eye on another Irishman as their draft combine is happening now.

I've had a thorough read on the draftees and I'm sure someone significant will slip through to 19, hoping for a GWS draft penalty to assist us :-) It doesn't matter which way you slice and dice the first 18 picks, there are some nice prospects still available.

Key to pick 9 will be what Freo does at pick 7 and Gold Coast's two non Bowes picks before us.
