How we got Oli: Special visit helps Swans land 'mentally tough' Florent - AFL.com.au

Emma Quayle's top 30 write ups. Based on her ratings with our first 2 picks we got players worth 2681 points for picks valued at 2241 for a net gain of 440. Emma is usually very sharp on rating talent, and we've done well by her standards:

        9. Will Hayward
        Forward
        Height: 185cm
        Weight: 77kg

Hayward has nous, energy and plays with a lot of spring and bounce. He stays involved; if he can't quite take a mark he's able to recover and move quickly towards the player the ball falls to so that he can lunge at them, harass them and lay tackles. He covers a lot of ground, uses his speed and spring to take marks and influences games in the most crucial way of all, by kicking goals. He will start out as a forward and is a natural there, but has the capacity to become part of his new club's midfield mix given time.

        13. Oliver Florent
        Midfielder
        Height: 182cm
        Weight: 74kg

Florent had a desperately difficult year, losing his father, and showed remarkable resilience to not only keep going but play better and better as the season went on. A smart and creative but low-possession small forward early on, by the end of the year he proved he was a legitimately good midfielder who is capable of winning his own ball, reacting and moving quickly. He uses the ball with class, creativity and a deft touch. He's slight and does most of his work at ground level but runs hard, moves well in and through traffic, can come up with something special from nowhere and has shown he can cope with incredible stress.
We have a number of mentally strong players. It seems a hallmark of our club. No wonder we picked Oli.

Can't the Giants prelist their academy players that weren't taken in the ND? I can never remember those rules from year to year. Sproule would be a pick in a rookie draft if he doesn't go to Giants.

There is still a fair bit of talent left in the draft pool this year. I like Bailey Morrish and Sam Walker from the above list, but suspect both will be gone by pick 17. If Tony O is still there, I would take him.

Delisted Giant Jake Barrett wasn't drafted and if gets past the PSD he would be another one worth taking. He was dominant in the NEAFL.

I would be interested in taking delisted Essendon and former Giant Shaun Edwards, and Halls Creek kid in Tye Bedford, who could be another Cedric Cox at a bargain price.

I'm sure KB has a few names up his sleave that we never heard of, like Lewis Melican and Tom Papley.

When reviewing the draft as a whole and where players were picked, I can hardly imagine how we could have done better. I think we took the best players that were available when our turns came, and players that fit our needs as well. It was a toss up for me between Simpkin and Florent, but am very pleased we got Ollie. Maybe the key was that Ollie already showed that he can play in the midfield in the 2nd half of the year, while Simpkin was out injured and didn't get an opportunity.

Just checked out the Florent highlights reel here: Pick 11: Oliver Florent - sydneyswans.com.au Looks pretty good to me, I kept thinking of Nat Fyfe while watching him...... good hands, good kick, good in traffic, tough and quick. I'm a bit excited!

Generally right, but there is always someone off with the fairies.

Jake Barrett will be redrafted by GWS as a rookie before Sydney has a pick unless another club gets in first. GWS have only one rookie position available as they trim their list so their academy players like Zach Sproule, Sam Fisher and Max Lynch are all fair game for the Swans.

Emma Quayle really likes this kid and Hayward too. As has been noted, our first 3 picks were all in EQ's top 30.

Now that we are in a position to review that pick swap, it seems to have turned out well for both parties. I thought Port would take Marshall as they really needed another tall forward. I though they would then take Hayward, but instead opted for SPP, and followed up with 2 more contested ball midfielders with their picks in the early 30s. If they would have taken Hayward, then SPP would have been my choice for pick 21, but I think it worked out better for us that Hayward slipped through. Losing pick 31 didn't turn out to be a loss at all, as we got the KPP we wanted in Maibaum anyway. I thought Ryan Garthwaite would have gone earlier and would also have been a good option. There's a lot to like about Maibaum. He could be a special player. Wouldn't it be funny if he turned into an Alex Rance?

Are you sure? It seems that they have 4 Cat A and 2 Cat B spots open. They currently stand the same as us with 38 on the primary list and 3 on the rookie list, and we are taking 5 rookies, so would guess they could do the same.

So X goes from playing in a GF alongside Buddy Franklin to being a "maybe" as a rookie for Essendon. Very odd decision-making by X.
Without any real evidence, I suspected that he was poorly advised by his manager. That is, he may have listened to an overly inflated assessment of his market value.
If Essendon don't rookie list him, I suppose that we could? Not really sure how he would take that?

Poorly advised by his manager? More like his manager saw an opportunity to churn one of his players to another club for a fee. May very well have ruined his career. I hope he gets a rookie spot with a club to give him a chance to resurrect his career. I suspect it's off to the VFL to show his wears with a chance of getting picked up next year.

Taking 6 in the draft was supposed to take the GWS list to 40 which then allows for only 4 rookies and Sam Reid, Daniel LLoyd and Joel Patfull are already on their rookie list. I assume that taking Barrett as a rookie fills their quota except for Cat B.

Florent on the other hand fits our needs really well and presents well in interview. I'm not too concerned about the go home factor. Hayward is a total steal at 21! He was rated top 10 by some and also fits our needs. Maibaum is a quality KPP. He was rated top 30 by Emma Quayle. Helpfully he can play both ends. I wonder where we'll end up playing him more? And Darcy Cameron is the ruck prospect that I was hoping for. However, I fell for Kinnear's line that we would wait until the rookie draft. Really solid for us.

The other clubs I think did well were both the Queensland clubs, both the WA clubs and, from Melbourne, I thought the Tiges did ok with their picks. Of course all clubs should be happy (possibly Hawthorn less than some ;-) )
Yes, I'm also really pleased with our selections. Especially the first two, where we've added some more speed and skill, to compliment our existing inside toughness.
I also thought that Richmond did really well. Picking up Graham at 53 might turn out to be one of the steals of the draft. While I don't know if there was a particular flaw in his game, that saw him taken so low, he is the current Larke medallist and they're usually go much earlier. To emphasise the point, the previous five Larke medallists were; Schache, Petracca, Sheed, Whitfield and Coniglio.

The draft feels a bit like the Melbourne Cup to me. Picking a highly ranked horse doesn't guarantee a winner. We should see how we feel about these young players this time next year.
