The Swans took their full time allotment before they selected Cameron, and there was some intense discussion at the table, particularly between Longmire and Beatson. Did they have an alternative ruckman they were considering? Or maybe they were debating the likelihood of Cameron slipping through to the rookie draft - knowing that West Coast still had live picks in the ND and a pick before the Swans in the RD (and with WC almost certainly still looking for some cover for NicNat in 2017).

Olango slipped through and the rookie pool is strong, so we get another chance.

I put Abe on the plane back to Sydney this morning. He's looking a svelte 122 kgs. I let him have 3 big macs before going past immigration control. He says it calms his nerves before flying. It took him 40 minutes to get through the full body scanner. I hope he's made enough progress to convince Tom Harley he's worth redrafting as a rookie tomorrow. Abe's got offers from other clubs. The GWS Giants want him as their travelling emergency mascot. His future looks bright.

In other news on delisted Swans, Xavier Richards has enrolled in a course on 'How to Butcher a Wallaby' at Ballarat University.

Poorly advised by his manager? More like his manager saw an opportunity to churn one of his players to another club for a fee. May very well have ruined his career. I hope he gets a rookie spot with a club to give him a chance to resurrect his career. I suspect it's off to the VFL to show his wears with a chance of getting picked up next year.

Same manager as Tom Mitchell I believe, FWIW.

I don't think we traded up to get Florent. I think we figured we'd get a much better player at 9 than 14. There was a lot of talk about Logue until it became clear he'd be gone. Longmire only visited Florent on Sunday.

It's all academic now. Florent can win his own ball and tackle so I'm hoping we drafted well.

And while we didn't get the dream result with our first pick, Florent is a better pick than we otherwise would have gotten and a better fit for our needs. Our other picks all went as well as we could have hoped, and even slightly better than that in Hayward's case. Overall I give us an A. Would have been A+ with an even better first pick.

Jake Barrett will be redrafted by GWS as a rookie before Sydney has a pick unless another club gets in first. GWS have only one rookie position available as they trim their list so their academy players like Zach Sproule, Sam Fisher and Max Lynch are all fair game for the Swans.

You were right on this. I must have missed a couple of rookie upgrades.

It seems they have 2 rookie spots open. I don't see what the point would be, especially from Barrett's POV being drafted back on the GWS rookie list after they've just drafted another 3 gun midfielders. The chances are next to nil he will ever play for them. I suppose we can say the same for the Swans. You would think he could get a spot on someone's list.

That is, a club can have 38-40 players on its primary list and another 4-6 rookies to make the total up to no more than 44 players (not counting Category B rookies).

However:

1. I still don't know if there is a minimum number of rookie players you must draft or whether they are entirely optional - can anyone assist? Liz?

2. Didn't we have 46 players on our list this year? How could this work? Colin O'Riordan was a Cat B rookie. Was there another? Foote perhaps as a NSW zone player?? ugg?

1. No, there is no longer a minimum number of rookies a club must have - used to be the case but now the rookie list is just another list management tool.

2. A club can have up to three additional players as Category B rookies on its Rookie List provided each player:

? has not registered in an Australian Football competition for three years immediately before inclusion on the Rookie List; or
? is an international player, meaning he is not an Australian citizen and has not lived in Australia for a substantial period; or
? is a former NSW Scholarship player with that club; or
? is a former International Scholarship player with that club; or
? is a rookie Zone Selection for clubs based in NSW or Queensland.

Last season the Swans had two Category B rookies - Colin O'Riordan as an Irish rookie recruit, and Kyle Galloway (now delisted) who only started playing Australian Rules in his late teens so I assume he fell under the first Category B eligibility criterion listed above.

Anyone know what time the rookie draft is on and how to watch it tomorrow? Really like the look of Liam Ryan. Would love to get him but I doubt any non W.A. side would take the chance. Looks to have loads of natural talent though.

Did my own detective work. Begins at 4pm tomorrow and not televised but will be able to follow online on most footy websites. We usually find some jems via the rookie draft so looking forward to it!

Thanks, Meg. Didn't realise Galloway was Cat B. I'm sure he was playing footy before we drafted him even though he may not have been playing it all that long. Maybe only certain leagues count? Anyway, I don't really care about the very fine details. Just glad to clarify there is no minimum number of rookies a club must have and Galloway was the 2nd Cat B rookie this year.

The wording of the first eligibility criterion is a bit ambiguous. I think it means a player is eligible under this if he has not played Australian Rules for each of the three previous years (rather then not played in any of the three previous years). I suspect Galloway had only been playing for two years before we rookie listed him.

But this is all guesswork by me. I don't know anything more about Galloway than was said when he was recruited from the Murray Bushrangers.

I assume that as he is now retained for a second year that Murray will now be Cat A and I think O'Riordan will remain as Cat B. It is my assumption that after the pre season draft that I guess we will ignore that we can list NSW zone selections as Cat B prior to the rookie draft. I think that means that we can prelist someone like Jake Brown as Cat B if they are not selected in the preseason draft. Happy to be corrected on any of this.

It used to be that Irish players didn't qualify as category B rookies but they change the rules so often that it's hard to keep track. Regardless, we had three NSW rookies (Foote as well as Galloway and Murray) who qualified to be category B rookies if the club chose to so classify them.

You are right, I just found the announcement from November 2015 in which Beatson said that both Galloway and Murray were recruited as Category B rookies and I now think they both came under the NSW zone selection rule. O'Riordan came under the international rule so we had three Category B rookies last year.

What are the differences between Cat A and B rookies? One of the main ones is obviously that Cat A rookies count towards you maximum total list of 44. Are there other differences? Can both be elevated to the senior list in place of a long term injured player?

Correct me if I am wrong, but Cat Bs can be signed any time I think, whereas As have to be taken via Rookie Draft?
