Noting I only know of these guys from the various videos posted over the last few days, but I'm most excited by Hayward. Excellent leap and mark, hard at it, dangerous. He reminds me of Rohan. Also Goddard. Spoke extremely well in interviews - smart and ambitious.

Reckon Florent is a long term replacement for McVeigh. Not quite the quickest, but silky, clever, knows how to find it, decent leap for his size, reliable finisher. Also spoke very well. Has a presence, a leader.

I'm a little surprised (and disappointed) that, with access to half the metropolitan Sydney area, plus Wollongong, Newcastle, the Central Coast and the north coast of NSW, not a single player of the 2016 cohort was deemed to be worthy of even a rookie list spot. I don't know enough about Brown to say whether I think the club should have taken him - he did play in the NEAFL side a year out from being draft age, suggesting they thought he showed promise, but this year's been tough for him with some injuries.

My comment about the highlight reels was purely a comment on the reels themselves, not the players. I don't really have a view on Edwards. I've not seen enough of him. He's taller than I had expected.

I'm a little bewildered by the drafting of Pink. Even Beatson sounds somewhat non-plussed by him. I hear what Beatson says about wanting a potential KPP, but it's rare to find them with the last pick in the rookie draft, especially straight from the U18 competition and when they are as raw as Pink is. If they wanted a taller player, I find it hard to imagine he's a more likely prospect than, say, Abe Davis, who was playing some pretty solid footy for the reserves team before he got injured. He must have done something to really unimpress the club during his rehab.

The second player taken today also seems a bit left-field, with no particular stand-out features (just based on how Beatson described him) that scream AFL potential.

However, I guess the rookie draft is the place to take a couple of low commitment gambles with players who get the recruiters wondering if they might just have something. And the Swans' hit rate in producing quality senior players from the rookie list over an extended period of time can't be questioned - even in the grand final team we had Jack, Rampe, Smith, Reg, Lloyd, Papley and Naismith (and X, of course). And these aren't just team padders: The first five of them earned spots in the top 10 of the B&F and another won himself a RS nomination during the year, showing just how important the rookie draft has been to the Swans' ability to remain competitive over a long period of time, with limited access to the cream of the draft.

Edit - I've just watched the highlights reel for that "second player taken today" (OK, I'll give him a name now, Robbie Fox.) I wonder if Longmire saw the tape before Beatson picked him. Or maybe he did, but Fox has since had a haircut. If not, he'll maybe want to book himself into Tom's saloon before he rocks up to training later this week and gets to make his first real impression on Longmire.

Talk about pickings diamonds from the rubble. We have X Richards who played for the minor premiers in a Grand Final yet we prefer to have on board a player who can not get a game with the bottom side who are missing twelve of their best players. Is someone having a lend of me or am I just having a bad dream. I obviously know nothing.

I thought we'd all agreed that the Swans need to lift their game man-bun-wise in 2017

LOL. I seem to be doing a bit of that recently. Salon/saloon - for some reason one of those words I've always had a bit of trouble with. I guess, deep down, I think we should all get our hair done in a saloon.

You probably got mixed up after your post on Aliir's new hairdo. And all the pics of Griffin Logue doesn't help either. The thing I miss most about not drafting Logue is not having the opportunity to say" Let's win this one for the Griffer."

It is bewildering how few good players have come out of our academy zone, but the couple that have of late are real gems. It's a shame about Abe Davis. He certainly had the talent to be an AFL player.

I like our rookie selections. There's a lot of logic to our picks.

Ben Ronke could easily have been a ND selection and many pundits had him in there around the 3rd to 4th round. We have a good record with our first rookie pick and think one will keep the trend going.

We like to take players who came to football late and Robbie Fox is one of those. Could be another Dean Towers, except Fox loves to tackle.

Sam Fisher: The GWS academy runs so deep that even the leftovers are tasty.

Shaun Edwards always seemed to be a talented player that lacked coaching. He landed at 2 clubs at the wrong time, when both were in a bit of disarray. I think he could be something if part of the right development program.

Pink is a mixture of Red and White. Can't get more logical than this selection.

Unfortunately the only thing Tony Olango had going for him was that his name rhymed with Jeannie Longo, the greatest female cyclist of all time, although probably with a little help from her friends. This alone was not sufficient in the minds of some recruiters to draft him.

A little tidbit about Ben Davis in this Crows website article

The draftee who won't play: Why Crows are sacrificing a list spot - AFL.com.au

The Crows have 39 players on their senior list after selecting five players at the NAB AFL Draft on Friday night. They took NSW 19-year-old Ben Davis with the 75th overall selection.
AFL.com.au understands the Sydney Swans submitted paperwork with the AFL to select Davis as a rookie-listed academy player if he made it through to the rookie draft.

AFL rookie draft: Ex-Swan Xavier Richards 'disappointed' to be left without a club

Former Melbourne captain Jack Grimes went unwanted, as did his former Demons teammate and 2010 Magpies premiership player Chris Dawes. Defender Cameron O'Shea - delisted by Port Adelaide last month - was another to miss out. Delisted St Kilda forward Eli Templeton had been linked to Sydney, but was not selected.

                          OUT 3 ruck men

                          IN only 1

I didn't think though we would end up with only one RUCK

If Sinclair and Naismith are both out for lengthy periods which is very possible Tippet would have either Reid pinch hitting or Cameron to join in

Going to be an interesting 2017 as this has been a sizable clean out of players.

Ressies will be a good watch with so many new players, my man O'Riordan is now almost a senior player in the ressies!
