I really hope he gets another chance at an AFL club. I can't see us classifying him as a required player to be honest.

My understanding re the clubs that trade fair is that if a player is deemed a required player (i.e. there is a genuine contract offer on the table but both club and player agree to explore any other options) then the club will drive a commercial bargain. Nankervis would fall into this category. If the player is not required but respected, and I suspect Deano is close to this, then we try and find another club for him but don't expect much at the trade table.

I guess we might keep him on as a depth player at minimum wages but he's better than that I believe

I am impressed by this noble sentiment. I agree Towers is good enough not to be playing seconds. But I stand by the club's decision that that probably shouldn't be with us. I suspect some deal is already in the pipeline. Otherwise I had thought (selfishly) that we should only trade him for a good deal and otherwise keep him for depth. But perhaps you are right and, for his sake, we shouldn't play hardball at the trade table and give him a chance to get somewhere he can shine. Maybe Queensland? Or Carlton always seem to be happy to take this kind of a player (Everitt, Lamb).
All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)

We're talking about the squad of players that flew down, not the final team or even the 3 emergencies. I would have thought Teddy would have flown down as defensive cover.

            Official teams.

            Out: McVeigh, Nankervis
            In: Jones, Tippett.

Pretty happy with those changes as long as everyone is fully fit and raring to go!

            Cats changes:

            Out: Ruggles, Menzel.
            In: Henderson, Bews.

Interesting that Menzel is out considering he was on 360 the other night talking up himself and the game!

            Go Swans!!!

I suspect this was a make or break year and they'll shake hands and wish each other the best. He just fell short with us.

The Lions will have plenty of slots on their list by the looks of it and I do think Dean would go well there, or Carlton could work. I would think we'd be looking for a second round upgrade at best. At this stage the Lions have pick 2,19, 28 and 47 with it being odds on they'll get a comp pick at the end of the first round plus it's looking like Hanley may go to the Suns for a first rounder (really?) and that maybe Rockliff will go to Adelaide. Somewhere they should be able to give us an upgrade on our second rounder

Menzel a big out for them. A clear avenue to goal and leaves flexibility for us with use of Rampe, Smith and Marsh.

Guessing this means Henderson will play forward. Reg to hawkins obviously, Rampe to Henderson or Aliir?

I hope Toby isn't too put out by being the bridesmaid at the selection table for finals when he considers his future ...

I realise the match committee knows infinitely more than I do about fitness and selections but I am still very nervous about Tippett playing. Jones less so. He may end up wearing head gear which has been a good luck charm for us in finals, eg Teddy and Jude.

I guess it depends on how he views it - On one hand he should be encouraged by his efforts but on the other his appetite has surely been whetted.

I actually think we need to re-think the whole ruck issue. I like the stable approach to our ruckmen whereby we now have four senior standard ruckmen who we will rotate through the seniors through the year with strategic and agreed rest spells.

But the more you look at it I reckon we're no chance. Tippett is clearly our Number 1 Ruck and is still only 30 next year so he could well have another 3 seasons left in him. Naismith has two years left n his deal and would appear our #2 whilst Sinclair is also contracted for three years. It's hard to build a compelling career case for Toby staying on as our fourth ruckman.

Having said that I would hope we really drive a hard bargain for Toby, a pick in the late 20s would not be too aggressive in my opinion

We traded for Paul Chambers with pick 35. So by comparison, if Nanks wants/has to leave, then we should get a top 5 pick.????????????
