I know there's been some criticism of George Hewett not having much of an impact, which I agree is true, but he is playing a new role this year and competing among the best players from both sides to get his hands on the ball. I think Longmire has thrown him in there knowing it's a learning experience and an investment in his development. He nonetheless leads the team in tackles this year, so he is making his mark. It looked better for him when he was playing forward and kicking goals, but we've had to give those roles to the lighter framed newbies in Florent and Hayward. He has the same number of disposals as KJ, who we all know is playing below past levels, but it shows that we need to keep our expectations realistic for a player with only 27 games experience.

      Apologies and duly noted.

Hewett is doing ok - we seem to expect an awful lot of Hewett, as he 'feels' like he has been there for a long time, which of course he has not.

It's also become apparent that teams know how to break the Swans down.

In the first quarter the Pies kept switching the ball from side to side. You would see Parker, Kennedy and Hewitt running from side to side to keep up with the play. I have no idea of the fitness results of Swans players but you would assume men with powerful builds like Kennedy and Parker are not going to be elite endurance runners. They are certainly not going to cover the ground like a Josh Kelly or Tom
          Scully.

If you run Kennedy and Parker around then they are going to be exhausted for the stoppages and not as effective. Kennedy and Parker are brilliant as tight combat players, but if they get to stoppages exhausted from running side to side then they are not going to be as effective.

Hawthorn brilliant kicking skills exploited the Swans this way from 2013 - 2015.

After the 1st quarter the Swans stopped the Pies switch and Kennedy started to become more effective.

I also think the way the afl wants the game to be played and umpired and lesser interchange is making it very difficult for our past contested style to dominate

Yes when we have more of the squad back back shear numbers of experienced / higher quality players will impose themselves on the opposition but for now we have tap ad go type footy and we are struggling to wrestle the game back for long periods

Re Hewett last year he played as a link in the half forward line

            This year on the ball

I think he is doing fairly well in a very tough role ie not many players can play inside outside on the ball in the second year of afl and dominate

The Jones Boy: There is a lot to like about his game but one thing that irks me is his dramatic appealing to the umpires. Does he really expect them to change their decision? In 50 years I have never seen that happen. Meanwhile while he is remonstrating the opposition has kicked a goal. He needs to put aside the injustice of the umpires decision and concentrate on the next play.

In watching the replay, a play stands out that has me scratching my head.

Florent has the ball at 55m with about one minute to go. He kicks into the goal square to Reid who is competing against 4 deep Collingwood players. Why was there not a ruckman or other tall Swans players in the goal square to rush that ball through for a behind? Why did a senior player not tell Florent to take his time and wait for tall players to arrive in the square? We could have rushed that ball through for a point, got the scores level and reset the wall searching for a win.

Zak's learning to manage his frustration. His remonatrations are less frequent and abusive than they used to be. He'll get there; he is motivated to become an elite player.

YES I noticed that also, it was strange, was it inexperience?? I also noticed a Collingwood player right next to the point post (about 1 minute to go) and Hayward decided to attack him rather than coral him, Collingwood player then stepped around him and cleared the ball. Could have easily been a turnover, inexperience again?

After watching Freo playing attacking footy, we are DONE, COOKED. Lyon allowed his young players to play footy, spread EARLY, 6 hand passes along the wing, centred to CFH and goal.

Longmire is the last of the dinosaurs. Defensive, percentage, reactive footy will lose most times.

LYON has left the 'defensive' building......

When it comes to attacking play I'm loving AA's play. Taking the mark and taking off. That late play when he took off and kicked straight down the ground to Dawson was the right play. It would have worked if it was a Buddy a Parker he was kicking to. Our defence needs more dash apart from AA and the speed is there. I would love to see Harrison Marsh study tape of Jayden Hunt and start backing himself and playing like that.

Our midfield is geared towards tight contested ball and I don't see that changing any time soon.

I think time is needed to make a true judgement on that - old habits die hard, even for Ross. The game is most certainly changing, and not in a way that is helping our preferred style of footy stay relevant.

So in my opinion, it should have been a 50, but I'd have settled for the ump re-setting the mark.
I've watched this incident a few times on the match highlights - it comes right at the start of Q4 - and I think Jones was dudded. He is running forward with the flight of the ball, marks it, then takes two short pulling-up steps which are obviously (to me, anyway) not playing-on steps but a way to avoid any possible injury from pulling up abruptly. He then puts his hand out as if to say, "Let's be clear I'm not playing on" and steps back to his mark and in doing so gets jumped. I can understand that people were ropable.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)
