Longmire's answer to everything is bomb the ball long. he dlesn't have secondary structures and it was obvious that Hawks knew our structures really well and it told tonight. We had no options because they cut them off before they became available. We had no ability to change up because our players have been trained to play like drones and not think out of the box. this so called game plan sure doesn't suit florent and Hayward and we are gpoing to lose these kids back to Vic & SA respectively because our coaching is @@@@.

Other than that our skills are pathetic and it seems that skills training is not a major part of training once again. We need some coaches with a little bit of skill or to get rid of the players who simply can't use the ball well. Our De was 60% tonight. Really pathetic, not going to win too many like that.

Again our much vaunted mids let us down with their spectacular delivery. Fumbling and bumbling stuffed us up once again. but I must admit our set ups are crap still in their defence.

Our players were lazy tonight and it showed.

The coaching was lousy because Calrko always had Horse's measure.

Even great coaches stop getting the message across from time to time and when it happens it is irreversible. It's time to fall on your sword John. Time for a fresh approach.

Lets see, Hawthorn play a kick and possession style game because they can't handle a contested battle. They have an extremely weak contested football team and have been smashed whenever they have been forced to play a contested style of game.

Knowing this does our coaching panel do the following:

        1. Tell our players to stay close to their man and constantly pressure him when in possession. Acknowledge that you will lose some one-on-ones but that the effort will get them there in the end; or
        2. Start from 10 meters behind and let Hawthorn play the game on their terms thus allowing them to build confidence and for the first time this year not implode in the second half when their bodies have been worn out by the physical pressure.

Given it has consistently failed to work against the Hawks the coaching panel of course chooses option 2. If they instructed the players to chose option 1 and they didn't do it then he has lost the group and should go. Otherwise he cannot adjust to the modern game and should go.

He was left a top notch side by Paul Roos that has been decimated by the awful decision to recruit Tippet after one good finals campaign. We decided to sell the furniture to get a Full Forward (let's be honest that was the plan before Buddy came) just at the time the role was being re-invented. Buddy is a great forward because he was the prototype, tall, extremely athletic and able to exert considerable forward pressure. The only thing in common with Tippet is the poor marking skills, otherwise he is slow an unable to apply significant. But we can play him in the ruck, who wouldn't have preferred to keep Mummy.

With the great side Roosey left I think Clarkson or another innovator would have seen Sydney win 2 - 3 more premierships as the game would have been adapted to play on our terms. We had a seriously good team even with a non-performing Tippet.

Horse thanks for the premiership enjoy your payout and move on. You simply can't coach a team to be adaptable enough for the modern AFL.

Does anyone think Roosey might be interested in coming back, I know he didn't leave on the best of terms but he has always been an innovator and great thinker, I have no doubt he could get the best out of the group. Perhaps as with Melbourne let him pick a keen young apprentice to take over in a few years.

As I sit here at work this morning and think about the season and what I got to wake up at 2 am to see, I don't think it's off-base to suggest the Swans need a fresh voice. The Swans had EVERYTHING to play for and laid an egg against a pretty poor and under-manned Hawks team at home. Right or wrong, Horse is not bringing out the best in his players...not even close. This doesn't mean he is not a good coach...but professional athletes do tend to tune out a coach after a while. Look at the Pittsburgh Penguins last year...changed the coach mid-season and won the Stanley Cup. The same with the Cleveland Cavaliers. I know he is under contract for many more years and the AFL is structured differently than American sports, but it is clear the Swannies are playing down to their opponents this season. The coach can't play the game for them, but is absoluely fair to question whether he is still able to bring out the best in them.

Get rid of the coach that has lead us to a premiership, 2 minor premierships and finals every year. Yeah surely he must be one of the worst coaches in the league. Maybe Justin Leppitsch wants to give senior coaching another crack, can't be any worse than Longmire right?

No question Longmire is a great coach. However, can it be denied that he walked into a gig with a strong side when Roos left? Some of the greatest coaches have had their message grow stale with a particular group of players. It's not necessarily the coaches fault but in a way, familiarity can breed contempt. Some of those coaches move on to fresh faces with another team and success follows again. I am not saying he should be fired...but I do think hard questions should be asked. Yes, the team has had a ton of injuries...but how many games have the Swannies begun this season where they look unconditioned and ill-prepared? I don't think it's out of line to ask the coach if he believes he has done a sufficient job preparing he team....but I suspect he will avoid answering the question.

Matty if the players have stopped listening it doesn't matter how great the coach is or has been.

If he is great coach how come the Hawks continually thrash us at uncontested possessions. That is their tatic and listening to Horse's post game interview he seemed surprised that the Hawks were winning the first half and were killing us in marks, possessions and handballs. Blind Freddy (sorry Freddy) would know how the Hawks would start their game and all we did was hand them the football with our rabble of a zone defence. How many times did they take the ball out of defence to loose players all over the field. How many times did we get the ball into our forward line only to have 3-5 Hawks against Buddy and maybe 1 other Swan. That happens every game we loose and yet the coaching staff seem impossible to see what is happening or are unable to think of a plan B.

I would say at end of the year - Farewell Horse and let the new coach pick his own supporting coaches.

With a decent coach we would have won 2016, maybe 2014.

                    Yawn.
A few losses and RWO becomes every other footy board.
I remember when the Swans went to Sydney and the crowds were ridiculed for not understanding the game properly.
The comments in this thread indicate that Swans fans are well and truly on par with those of other teams.
Blame the coach. Single out player errors that 'ruined our season'...

Maybe not get rid of him, but perhaps it should be our defensive coach. How many times do we kick backwards to a player manned up. or kick badly going forward particularly out of defence. We have a number of perrenial culprits to name a few Grundy, Smith, LLoyd and now Mills letting poppy kick a goal Rampe was one but he appears to have got rid of the habit.

[QUOTE=Doctor J.;726318]With the talent he's got on the list over the last 5 years, someone like Clarkson would have easily won 3 and possibly 4 premierships. Longmire has a lucky 1. Just ponder that thought. What we have let slip through our fingers because we got lucky in 2012.

Their list has had way more skill and talent than ours- Mitchell, Hodge, Lewis, Burgoyne, Rioli, Lake, Roughead etc. Longmire has got us to three grand finals, including a premiership, with a hard nosed pressure based game style. If we tried a purely skill based possession game, we would have coughed the ball up and been hammered by a number of teams. I reckon as supporters we've been spoilt. We have a good young list. Longmire strikes me as an honest person who would know when his time was up. The coaching team should be supported. Young players make mistakes. Mills could have iced the game but kids make blues. We also came off 2 six day breaks. I reckon the future is bright. Imagine supporting a host of other teams who have done nothing over a number of years. We have a great club and culture.

We also lost 2 players very early. One arguably our most important player this year and the other who has been very good up forward and down back.

To lose 2 players so early in the game was a game changer n the 2 players that we lost were very important structurally were game breakers. Done very very well considering. One thing I didn't like was Rohan to half back. Without Reid we lacked support for Franklin in the forward line.
