Maybe you don't know, The Runner, but 'fairy' is a word with clear homophobic connotations. It has no place in this forum unless it is clearly used in another sense. For the very reasons you outline it was perjoratively applied to gay men. Gay men have since reappropriated the term. To use it now as a put down is offensive, however lovely you may think fairies, sprites and pixies actually are.
All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)

Language can be arbitrary. Perhaps Runner had something else in mind? I did not make the correlation between the signified and signified you did above. Perhaps that could be due to our differing contexts. Any act of communication is wrought with difficulty (including this one) and is heightened because it is not face to face. I for one, would give Runner the benefit of the doubt. Call me ignorant, but that did not seem like homophobic slander.

Sadly this forum is degenerating into a bitch fight like so many other forums whereby "strong posters" can say what they like with impunity, and others get either panned or banned, for example Barry gets hammered for his alternate views and Matt80, who to me has a great insight into the game and the club, is banished for no real reason other than pi55ing off some of the strong posters. Ludwig, whose postings I respect, is allowed to put forward any crackpot theory without retribution. Thats okay, but why cant Barry, or Matt80 or me do the same without someone hanging @@@@ on us. We all have one thing in common, a love for the SMFC/Sydney Swans. Why cant we stop slagging off on each other and out of form players and just support our beloved Swans.

I think the way the term 'fairy' was used is fairly obvious.
Allowing this kind of remark to remain unmoderated for 2 days lowers the reputation of the board.

In the unlikely event that Ludwig should ever put forward a crackpot theory, it would deserve repudiation, but not retribution.

Otherwise, I fully support civility on the RWO forum and I believe the mods have been as permissive as possible regarding free expression on the forum. I've had quite of number of my posts deleted by the mods over the years, and sometimes I felt it was unwarranted. I'm sure others have felt the same. I haven't always agreed with the sanctions the mods have taken against other posters as well.

Ultimately, RWO is a community, and the rules of behaviour are effectively determined by the consensus of the community. It is irrelevant whether any one member thinks a particular comment should be sanctioned or not, or even what kinds of comments should be permissible. If the mods actions reflect the community consensus, then they are correct, and as individuals, we can either accept to remain in the community or leave.

Thankyou Ludwig, I learnt a new word today "consensus".

p.s. I stand by my use of the word retribution because that is what it is more often than not.

The forum doesn't reflect community standards.
It is far more conservative, and it probably should be.

Hey, if that's how it came across I do apologise. It was tongue in cheek and meant to refer to his lack of contested marking - nothing more than that. Genuinely didn't think of it as anything more and happy to have the post taken down if it's caused this.

This post has dealt with the concerns, are we all comfortable to move this along?

Happy to remove the word if anyone still objects, The Runner has pm'd me on this and it's fine, just let me know. Otherwise, as CTS says, it's been well self-moderated!

On a broader matter, if anyone has concerns about the way the forum is run, PM me. I have no problems taking some heat, or constructive criticism, or simply providing a listening keyboard to a rant.

I agree it has been well self-moderated. No need for anything further. Glad I said something. Even gladder that The Runner clarified his innocent intent. All good.

Time to start crackpotting exploding theories.

Glad that is all resolved. Now, from The Age, 4 words I never thought I'd see together: "lowly Sydney and Carlton". How has it come to this.
