In Miller's seven years as coach, from 1955 to 1961, South Melbourne finished in the top five every season and won a premiership in 1956. This was also Souths only U/19 Premiership.Comment

Reposting this for aardvark as the pics didn't show up. This is in reply to this post from bloodsCaptain, I am detecting large quantities of win in this sectorComment

I stand corrected about 1956 - except that I know for sure that Miller was coaching the U/19s in 1966 when they finished fourth. I was at the first semi-final and he was the coach all right. So he must have had two separate stints.Last edited by Bloods05; 20 June 2017, 11:06 AM.Comment

Yes. 1966 was a "one off" before he took on the Senior job in 67 and 68. Between 62 and 66 he was coaching co-ordinator and served on many committees.

I was at that game as well B05, my brother played in it and they painfully lost narrowly to Collingwood .South only got in because Richmond were kicked out of the Finals for playing ineligible players. Slug Jordan was the Tigers U/19 coach.
By the way, and this is off topic, do you remember the cockatoo that was kept outside the cricket club bar at the old lake oval? Fascinating for me as a kid at the time when I used to go and watch the thirds(under 19s). It's language was very 'colourful ' at the time!Comment

All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)

Understandable as Hewett is now a tagger, Lloyd a quarter back and Dawson has moved onto country music.

He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)Comment

Have just watched the highlights of last Saturday for the umpteenth time and noticed something I didn't pick up before.
When Sam Reid kicks a goal after the half time siren, Tom Papley (I think!) starts sprinting towards Reid to congratulate him but is waving for teammates to come along with him.
You just get the feeling that playing for the Swans, like his grandfathers did, means so much to him.Comment
