On this subject of the value of sports TV rights, there was a news report a couple months ago where bankers
were urging Channel 9 to drop their cricket coverage because they were losing between $30M and $40M a year on it.
Channel 10 is basically insolvent so you wouldn't imagine they will be putting their hand up for it.
Free to air TV is clearly struggling everywhere, print newspapers won't last much longer, and the whole media
landscape is much more fragmented because of all the new technologies coming in. And so the way media pays
for sport rights will change substantially, if indeed they pay for it at all down the track. It wasn't so long ago
that new technologies meant people had the choice whether they paid for music, and mostly they decided against it,
and the traditional record industry was wiped out. The music industry and footy will continue but the way it is
monetised is and will be substantially different, and not everyone will be happy about it.

That was a deliberate leak of a Channel 9 conducted consultancy piece. They want to keep the cricket, but pay the same as the previous rights and also get the BBL included.

Viewing methods haven't changed too much. It's more the patterns. As people watch less long form live content, how will the rights payers continue to find/drive value in their new asset.

The comment about fragmented sports rights is true. Having FTA, Pay TV & Telco all involved in a single sport drives up the revenue. Look at the Optus and EPL deal as how to never, ever do sports rights deals.

The failure of Channel Ten was due, in large part, to its butchering by Murdoch in order increase the profitability of Fox Sports. Once he came on board they turned the dedicated sports channel One (a direct competitor of his pay TV company) into a crap movie channel (mixed with other garbage no one wanted to watch) and dumped AFL.

Live sport is the one thing that media companies can still bank on - if you lose that you lose relevance and the certainty of a dedicated audience. There will always be big money in high profile sport.

Remember that NBC owned the NFL TV rights until Fox arrived and they never go it back.

NBC misread the situation and thought they couldnt cope to pay for the rights but it was their biggest asset and they let it go.

Am I the only one that hope we play in the white strip as the Giants will certainly play in their mostly orange home strip?
I find it hard to differentiate between red and orange on the tv.

No you aren't the only one. I also struggle to make out who is who. I'm surprised the AFL haven't forced either side to wear their away strip.

Agree 100% on the away strip YvonneH. Essendon comfortably dealing with the saints at half time tonight. If Essendon get up, the ladder will be getting pretty congested around 7-10th.

Saints in front of us, Bombers behind us. Wow, do we need a win against the Giants tomorrow. Let's hope we do not get any injuries tomorrow night, although a couple of their players i.e. Toby Greene, Mummy do play a little bit rough (dirty or rough?) we may be lucky to get away with that.

Some simple maths. GWS got 15,000 to three most recent game against a finals competitor from Interstate. That leaves about 10,000 tickets left for swans before it's sold out. Yet they haven't sold yet.

GWS got 15,000 to three most recent game against a finals competitor from Interstate. 7,500 of them were travelling visiting team members, 3,500 were Swans members, meaning Giants get 4,000 tops to their games.

Swans have 60,000 members, 15,000 are interstate, 18,000 Swans members made up the crowd of 22,000 on Saturday night. 40% of the Swans Sydney based membership!!

I was out at ANZ on Saturday night. An unbelievable experience to be amongst the 80 plus thousand watching Arsenal.

The stadium is fine as a rectangular sports venue. Not a bad seat in the place.

The 2 hours it took to get back to the CBD is a very good reason why Sydney fans based in the East wont travel to ANZ or Spotless. Totally killed the night. Yes Melbourne fans travel to all games, but that is because it doesn't take forever to get home after the game.

I left Spotless straight after the game, and was un-pleasantly surprised to find they'd scheduled both games to finish at the same time. There was an appalling scrum of people trying to get a train from Olympic Park, but the whole trip, door to door (to Newtown, including a 15 minute walk) took me an hour.

Sorry Doc, I think your maths may be a little awry. At the recent GWS game against Geelong there were at most 1,500 to
2,000 people supporting the Cats out of the 15,000 crowd, so 10% to 15% of the crowd were supporting the away team.
If Geelong played us at the SCG then a similar ratio would show up there to support the Cats. The average crowd at a non
derby GWS game at Spotless this year is about 12,000, I'd say about 9,000 or so are GWS members. The rest are away
team supporters and one-off footy attenders and neutrals.
So about half their membership show up for a game. It's very similar ratio for us at the SCG. There are Swans members
whose first team is not the Swans, it's probably not as high a ratio of GWS members whose first team is not the Giants, but
you know, the Swans have been around just a little longer than the Giants.
In the five seasons from 1990 to 1994, the Swans played 54 games at the SCG, the team had been in Sydney for a decade,
we were the only AFL team in Sydney and the average SCG crowd for that entire period was 9,932. And some of them
were supporting the opposition. Sure we weren't much chop then, but if you really care, you show up regardless.
I'm not sure we should get too much joy or be on our high horse from GWS low-ish crowd numbers compared to ours.
We have had a thirty year head start in Sydney.

were neutrals/first-timers and a few that got the stadiums mixed up and were disappointed to find Arsenal weren't
playing.

The Arsenal game kicked off at 8pm, should have finished around 9:50 which would have been around 15-20 minutes before our game. The line to buses were short (definitely shorter than the SCG ones) but I noticed the direct path from Spotless to the train station was blocked and they forced everyone to walk around the block to get to the entrance.
