Melican will come back in against the cats. The tricky selection could come if we get to play Richmond in the GF. I can see Melican being very unlucky in that situation.Comment

Yep, I agree that would be a strong possibility. He was omitted for the Tigers game earlier in the year. What he does have in his favour is he's quick. Interestingly, they retained Marsh in that game, who I don't think is any quicker than Melican. We didn't have McVeigh for that game.Comment

Vic umpires can umpire 2 Vic teams playing. No problem of Bais there. If you take this weekends games and maximize the vic-ness.
Crows GWS = vic umps.
Rich cats = Vic umps
Swans essendon = SA/WA/QLD
Port v WC = Vic umps.
It's an integrity thing.
We made the caps even for integrity according to Gill. Let's keep going.Comment

Neutral umpires makes sense as a fan on an emotional level but I can see why the umpires would resist it massively.
For starters it is a huge slight on their integrity, possibly justified, and also from a Vic Umpires perspective it would mean that very rarely would the biggest nursery of umpires (and probably the best) get to officiate the big one. Since 1990 there has only three Grand Finals without a Victorian team (2004-6) so you're effectively disenfranchising the entire Victorian Umpires Association.
As for why there are no NSW umpires I cannot speak for the country leagues but the Sydney umps cannot even manage the local league and would destroy and AFL Grand Final with their incompetence.
On the whole I think the blaming of Umps on results is poor form and largely exaggerated in terms of their impact. The modern game with its speed must be incredibly difficult to officiate and we should recognise that.
I would like to see more accountability though, those guys last year really shouldn't officiate a game at the highest level for a long time

I think Mills was unfairly maligned in an earlier post as being the one who attempted the kick across goal to Newman. In fact it was Heeney, not Mills, who kicked it.Comment

I am cannot understand anything that was said on this topic on umpires?. All people are asking for is to have at least one interstate umpire. I am sure there is a competent SA or WA umpire capable of umpiring an AFL match, even if NSW umpires are not capable. Why we always have 3 Victorian umps is just beyond belief. Local biased umpires was got rid of in international cricket many years ago.

Lance has kicked 21.6 in the last 4 weeks with a basically revamped run up.
It's pretty astonishing he's significantly changed this ingrained habit of a swinging arc out to the left to a much straighter run up after 12 -13 years.
It's probably under the coaching of Plugger who is incredibly back into footy after shunning it for so long.
Not at all straightforward to change such an old technique.Comment

Speaking as an unreconstructed Victorian, I can say not many of us look at football from a state perspective. It is a club thing, pure and simple. When it comes to footy, state loyalties mean nothing. And it has never been part of football culture here to regard umpires as biased towards, or against, one club or another. Particular umpires have often been regarded as incompetent, and in the odd game (e.g. last year's GF) they have been justifiably accused of bias when swept up in the euphoria of a club's rise. But in my long experience, umpires as a group have never been credibly accused of taking a set against a particular club or state. It just doesn't happen.Comment

What a terrific team performance, not a passenger in the whole side. Nothing taken for granted, we were ruthless and committed. That second quarter was one of the most complete quarters of finals footy I've ever seen, not a side left in the competition that could have withstood it.
Keep it up fellas, I'm loving the ride!!Comment
