General footy chat New recordings of AFL club songs

They have rerecorded some of the club songs including Cheer Cheer. I don't think it sounds too different apart from the trumpet being more prominent and the banjo solo sounding weird. We are lucky...some of the other club songs just don't sound right.

Noooo. They can't mess with the banjo solo. Can they?

Where can you get to hear the new recordings?

Sounds the same except they sing "whether the odds" rather than "what ho the odds"

          I don't mind the change.

I think it's awful. It doesn't have the same feel that the Fable Singers version does and I don't like the change of words. I hate agreeing with Eddie but he has said that Collingwood are using the 1972 recording for their version and that's that. The Swans are clearly switching though as the AFL said that a small number of clubs requested lyric changes. I know Richmond are one but I'm assuming we are one of the others, which means that we'll play the new version. The players have sung "Whether" for years so while it brings it into line with what they sing, "What though" is way better than "Whether".

This is tragic. I still haven't learned the words to the old song, and now they pull this one on me.

I just learned the words to Waltzing Matilda. The next thing you know, the government will be changing the national anthem.

I don't mind it - it keeps the essence of the song intact. And the bass is fantastic. I'm a bass player and the new bassline is both (a) really interesting and (b) provides really strong harmonic structure to the song

The whining is symptomatic of the insular backwards nature of AFL fans.

Are they so insecure about the game that they fear any change?

Whining? Fearing change? I like the old version better and I want the lyrics to stay as they were. That's it. Change is important and necessary but not for the sake of itself.

Feels a bit more lively and energetic than the old one, which was a little on the stodgy side. More fun. It sounds good and will feel good to belt out when you're pumped up after a win.

Bit disappointed in the banjo solo - just not quite the same!

If one wants a real laugh, listen to the 2nd verse of the Geelong song...
"You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."

I for one like the old Swans song. I love that if you listen clearly you can hear the words ?South? in the line ?Swans will go in ...? where they clearly just overdubbed the word swans on top on South

I think the old South Melbourne supporters should be upset about this. I?m a new fan since the club moved to Sydney but I?m very proud and mindful of the heritage of the South Melbourne Swans

                              Swans New Theme Song

I don't know about you guys but i'm not a fan of the new version of our theme song. i find it very flat and it doesn't give me the same excitement as our original version. i really hope we can go back to our original version as it is definitely the best and the fans prefer it. Being at the SCG on Saturday, a lot of people around me we're hating the new version as it had no real energy to it. i hope the hierarchy at the club can go back to our original version asap.
