Team List Changes for R12 v Saints

    OUT : Stoddart, Rohan, Newman

    IN : Papley, Cameron, Aliir

After watching the 2's on Friday...

Aliir looks primed to me. It's time to get him back in the seniors.

Cameron is also primed and it might be prudent at this stage to manage Sinclair's game time...We need him firing later in the year when the whips are cracking.

If Papley needs more time off then I guess Rohan will be retained as a pressure forward.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MT

We really need another tallish marking forward. It didn't work with just Franklin up there.

I Agee with Ernie. Time to give Cameron a game. We need a other tall to divert the attention from buddy. McCartin did pretty well. I would give Cameron a go to see what he brings.

      Same changes as Ernie.

We missed Papley in a big way on Friday night. His angst was absent. A bit like Mcglynn used to bring. I?ve realised how important he is

On the one hand, I think it would be a bit unfair to drop Newman after just one game back. On the other, there wasn't a clear role for him in the team that suited him, and he didn't contribute very much.

I doubt the coaches will add two taller players against the Saints, not on the fast Marvel deck. And not with Carlisle still missing. They may well remember Sinclair's last outing against the Saints, predominantly as a forward, and decide that a sequel is on the cards. I think bringing in Cameron to provide more height up forward (directly or indirectly) is far more likely than bringing in Aliir against an opponent whose only viable tall forward is (the not overly tall) Membrey. It might be fun for the McCartin family to have the two boys playing against each other but I reckon there's close to no chance of that happening (unless Buddy gets himself injured between now and Saturday), given Longmire's comments about sending him back to the NEAFL to continue his development.

And while I don't think Stoddart is in our best 22 at the moment (or even particularly close to it), I can see the coaches giving him another week on a deck that is at least guaranteed to be dry to see whether he can use his run and pace to more advantage.

I thought Towers played his best NEAFL game on Friday since his demotion. I thought he was the best Swan in the first half while Uni were still competitive, and kept going once the party started after half-time and lots of others joined in. He does provide flexibility to the side, with his contested work much improved in the last 18 months but still able to provide outside run if needed. He'd be my first choice of the senior reserves to come into the team, if there's a spot for him.

I don't see the point in bringing Papley back after just one week's rest (and no training for several weeks) if he's as sore as Longmire hinted at. He's a useful player to our set-up and one that it would be good to have fit and in the team as finals approach, but he's not so critical as to turn this into a danger game* with his absence alone. We have the bye the following week, which gives him an extra week to rest and/or train.

*(It is a danger game if the team takes it lightly, particularly given the Saints played themselves into some form late in yesterday's game, but not due to the possible absence of Papley.)

          In : Cameron, Towers

Newman did nothing, was very slow and all I could see was running all over the place not minding anyone and not doing anything in the forwards. Has really slipped from last year.

As much as I love seeing Gary play, he just goes missing for most of the game and his scoring ability has dried up.

We really need to get some support for both Sinkers and Buddy. Even though the bye is coming up, we face West Coast and they have talls all over the place. Plus we need to hit the scoreboard as our percentage is low and that could punish us hard at the end if there are a few teams vying for a double chance.

I?m a big fan of Stoddart?s potential but I think he should now go back and develop in the NEAFL. I?m not convinced about Newman in our current setup either.

Personally, I think the much-maligned Towers needs to be in our 22. He provides pressure and effort as much as anyone.

I also agree with others that Cameron has earnt his chance for a debut. St Kilda?s rucks are pretty ordinary so this would be a good game to play Cameron and give Sinkers a bit of a rest playing deep forward. We could then evaluate this setup before the Weagles game.

Re: Aliir - I?m starting to think that he just hasn?t taken that next step to be a consistent first grade player. If he is loping around in the NEAFL then I don?t see why he will suddenly turn it on in the top grade. He needs to be banging down the door but he isn?t. It?s a romantic notion that he succeeds and becomes the player we glimpsed in 2016 but the evidence is not supporting him.

            In: Towers, Cameron
            Out: Stoddart, Newman

Wow, I admit that Rohan is patchy, but I thought he played his best game for a while on Friday. There are others who need to go before he does.

I was a fan of Newman last year, but he didn't have a great game on Friday. Did anyone else think that he looked a little pudgy? Of course, there's definitely times you could say that about Franklin too, so doesn't necessary mean anything. I'm still not convinced by Stoddard either. He might have a future, but not this year. OTOH, Marsh is slowly winning me over. Looked pretty comfortable I thought.

Towers is an interesting one. Maybe the coaches think they can play only one of him and Rohan.

The elephant in the room is Hannebery. Has not been good all year following that injury, and has had plenty of chances to play himself into form without success. It's not quite the same situation as Goodes was in (ie. no sub rule any more), but maybe it's time for a rest and a run in the twos. He might get one more game and see how he comes back after the bye.

Looks like Darling might be out, which is a huge shame given the form he's in, except that it will help us a lot. Without Tippett and Reid, we have no one who can stand under the high ball. We've been trying to use Buddy and Rohan in that role, but neither are suited to it. I think McCartin is probably the one, but not sure he has it in him to go a whole season and into finals.

Sinkers is relishing his role as lone ruckman. Resting or bringing in another ruckman (Cameron) can only disrupt that. Leave well alone.

You can tell longmire is getting tested on Rohan when Rohan's playing 2nd ruck.

Rohan stays in because of his pressure and ability to create match winning plays that no one else is capable of. The two examples from Carlton game were , firstly, his phenomenal rundown of Simpson. The second play where he burnt off a number of players and then got a handhall received, accelerated, palmed off Kreuzer and kicked a long perfect pass to Buddy was outstanding. Last year, his heroics got us over the line v Tigers at MCG in the last quarter. His mark and magnificently weighted kick to Ronke late v Hawks was instrumental. We would all like him to get the ball more but he doesn't need as much of the ball as others and he is often at his strongest in the last crucial last quarter.

I agree - and when you consider his history of injury, it doesn?t seem the obvious spot for him to play. I wondered if he put his hand up mid week to play in the ruck and that is the reason he got back into the side.

Towers? bigger body seems a better fit for centre bounce work (regardless of whether he would be capable of negating the opposition ruckman or not).

I don't read to much into it. Someone has to help out Sinclair when Towers is out of the side, and we don't have any really obvious options. (Buddy is not going to be doing it for sure). In the past few weeks we've had Rohan, Marsh, Parker and even Kennedy competing in the ruck.

Cameron must come in as the other tall forward and to give Sinclair a rest in ruck, he must win more taps than 185cm mids competing against ruckmen.

Stoddart had a look, been ineffective now time to go out.

BEcause i don?t sit down and look at all the indv match ups prior to team selection I find it difficult to comment on ins and outs

                          Ie

Where can we nullify their advantage via matchups?

Where can we create an advantage via match ups?

What style do we want to play this week?

Who deserves their spot and is in alignment with what we want to play now?

What are we building towards over the seasonto be able to defeat a top team such as Richmond?

Have we created a team balance that will be ready for finals yet still win NOW - this weekend !!

What areas of the field do we want to control the game and then break from?l to set up our forward entries?

What areas do we not want saints to have open space so they are constricted and do t build their forward entries as easily?

Bringing in someone tall allows us to create another target to create a contest and advance the ball forward only if we are winning the ball in the midfield or our backline.

Bringing in someone medium tall or short means we can have greater run and can generally finish a game stronger ie vs Carlton good example

Recently we have experimented using several players in the ruck ie marsh, kennedy, Parker etc and against inferior midfields this has worked in a total game sense yet I preferred our balance with sinkers and towers and the ability to have the both drift forward as targets

I?m leaning towards only one change against the Saints as I?m comfortable we have not seen the upside of Stoddart yet. Only a newbie, super young and learning quick. The upside of a couple games in Snrs and applying his speed is still helpful to stretch the Saints ie The additions of Ronke and Stoddart gives us some serious speed and is alignment with the fast AFL of 2018 our faster direct running transitions and I feel they are not a dead weight for our team. Marsh is reasonably quick also (fastest repeat sprints in his Draft).

I have noticed last few weeks having extra speed has created a challenge for the opposition to matchup .......it has also meant Ollie Florent has had more space and becoming a very important transitionplayer for us already !!!!

The extra speed across the team makes us pretty tough to match up on as long as we keep winning the contested footy........it is starting to look like a team that can take on the run of port, Geelong and most importantly the two big games west coast and Richmond over the next few weeks - yet still win now

                          Out: newman
                          In: Towers

                            Interesting post AG.
I thought the McCartin experiment was successful but concede he is still to young for a long stint. Having a competitive tall would help Buddy and our talls.
Having Sinclair and Cameron sharing the 2 roles seems the best fit for now
