There was also a push to drop the Swans nickname and as a South Melbourne Swans supporter from birth, I was prepared to drop my beloved Swans if they went 'two blues' and got another nickname. So glad they kept the historic connection intact.

Same here and it was a very close run thing. I still followed the Swans but it really was only when Roos too over that old South supporters felt entirely back in the fold.

Yeah it was also Paul Roos who initiated putting SMFC on the back collars on the jumpers.
Think Roos once said he doesn't have any affiliation with the Brisbane Lions, because to him Fitzroy died when they merged with the Bears.

I remember my dad saying at the time that he would stop supporting them if they changed their colours. He will be turning 85 next month and he is still as passionate as ever about the swans.

I said the same to my then 5-year-old son. Since then we've seen 2 flags together and attend every Victorian game religiously. The Roos-Colless embrace of the South Melbourne heritage and the players' adoption of the 'Bloods' moniker has made it all so much more meaningful for us, and I'm sure many thousands of others. History matters.

There was a suggestion of changing the colours to a green jumper with a yellow V in attempt to give it Australia-wide appeal (green & gold). I remember seeing a photoshopped (or whatever the equivalent in the mid 80s when the Doc was taking over) action picture of Tony Morwood in this design in a Sports magazine. Wish I kept the article.

Also, I seem to recall that we went to the all read backed jumper, the Redback Spiders was considered.
