Noted Horse's comment in the after match presser: they had to play Hanners forward because he couldn't run. That may well be true, but it's not the only thing he needs treatment for. He is brave to the point of kamikaze attack, and needs someone else to pull him up and look after whatever is wrong.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

To be perfectly frank, I don't think we will miss KJ much at all. His output has dropped the last couple of seasons quite significantly, and he is on the peripheral now. We will miss his leadership of course, but output on the field is marginal now.

A fully fit Hanners is a different story altogether, and of course McVeigh is the biggest loss of them all, as he has been still so influential.

Well, you’ll get your wish now. KJ is gone too. & McVeigh.

Reckon It’s going to be an ugly end to this season.

Of the inclusions last night Fox showed promise, Robinson has had a few chances to date - but apart from
the goofy photo on the scoreboard and a nice goal, doesn’t seem offer much (or even to trust himself at senior level), Fawlty was a waste of space.

Melican is gone (again) and as far as Sam Reid goes, just a matter of time before the next injury.

There’s a massive step up from the ressies & only the ‘Hanners defenders’ seem to understand it.

Can see some major carnage in the middle for the rest of year. Hope I’m wrong…

Serious decisions need to be made, this is male cow manure!
Newman gets chances - does nothing. Gets dropped.

Will no doubt get another start very soon. Let’s hope he can step up.

I have watched a lot of reserves games this year - live and on TV and I am not sure Newman is the answer.

He seems to make a lot of mistakes and he is not very fast. He tries to do more than his talent allows and turns the ball over too many times.

Plus I don't think he is hard enough at the ball.

I don't wish injuries on anyone (well maybe Jaeger O'Meara!)

In any event I wouldn't be surprised to see Hanners named next week, injury or not.

As for the inclusions, Fox was one of our better performers, Robinson was good, Towers was admittedly off. So two out of the three taking the "massive step" had better games then Hanners.

I don't have a beef with Hanners, I love him as a player and he's been a champion of the club for a number of years. I do however have a problem with senior players who are clearly playing injured getting a gold pass for a game regardless of their output. It's not a recent phenomenon, it's been a hallmark of Longmire's reign and playing unfit senior players has cost us on numerous occasions (2016 GF anyone?)

How do we know if someone can step up from the NEAFL if they're not getting the opportunity? Newman has been pillored on here, but this season he's had 3 non-consecutive games played out of the position where he played his best footy last year, 2 of those games were passes, the third not so great.

I don't particularly like stating it, but personally I think the team will be stronger without Jack and won't lose anything without Hanners in their current form. McVeigh is obviously a loss, but its also an opportunity to see what someone else can do in that position.

As for the thread title, I'll admit it was in the heat of the moment post game and is a little harsh, but refers to the "he's a champion, he's not allowed to be dropped" brigade which somehow still exist on here even after last night

                He got 12 disposals tonight.
About 4 less than Ablett who is fit.

Agree re Jack but I think the club were banking on him still being effective during the years he was still in contract.

I call BS on all the injuries happening to underperforming players. Jack excluded.
Funny how players aren't dropped, they are injured.
I'd suggest that they carry more potential trade currency this way.
So I guess I'm not complaining

If not that then miss the rest of this year and be ready for another go in 2019.

We cannot afford to play him now in his current form. No run, no sparkle, no assists, nothing !
They did that with him earlier in the season.

If that's the case he has had it for about 3 years. He has supposedly recovered from this. Sometimes players will say they are ok when they really aren't. If he got a calf injury why leave him out there if he was useless. By being out there he was a liability.

Agree with all of this.....surely doing the opposite by persisting with him in the seniors is potentially jeopardizing his longer term future. I'd rather have a gun Hanners running around in 2019 than the pale imitation lumbering around now.

                                Hanners is absolutely cooked.

Shadow of his former self, injury prone, slow and has lost his main strength - gut running.

                                Time to go Daniel.
