      NEAFL 2018 Round 14

Sydney Swans Reserves v Giants @ North Dalton Park, Wollongong

      Saturday 7th July 2018
      12:00pm
      North Dalton Park

This will be the 2nd match at North Dalton Oval for the Swans, having played Ainslie in Round 14 2014 and winning that game by 6 points.

After losing the first 4 games of the season, the Swans's fortunes have turned completely around. With important players returning from injury adding strength to the side, they have reeled off 7 straight wins and are now within striking distance of joint leaders Southport and Sydney Uni. However with a tough run home - 5 of the last 7 games are against opposition AFL teams as well as the always difficult road trip to the Northern Territory - the Reserves will be out to seal victory against an undermanned Giants team to consolidate their position in the Top 6. And on an individual level, there are spots up for grabs in the senior team following the injuries that occurred during last night's loss.

The Swans have named 13 listed players and with the AFL match out of the way, all 4 emergencies should line up for us. The Giants meanwhile don't have that luxury with their away game in Perth, meaning they will be down to 8-9 listed players. However they have shown in the last 4 weeks, they can manage to win despite being down on experienced AFL players.

      In: Pink
Out: Lewis MELICAN (injured), Ryley STODDART (injured), Angus STYLES (injured)

Pink finally makes his long awaited return. Will be play back or forward? Perhaps even a stint in the ruck?

Stoddart and Styles were injured early last week and Melican was on limited game time so there shouldn't be too many structural changes from last week's win again the Lions. Kennelly said that Bell ran out of puff due to playing more minutes than expected due to the injury, and ended up in a back pocket.

Foote, Dawson, Brown, Newman, Bell forms a solid midfield unit with Marsh and O'Riordan as other options if required. Cameron and Amartey have been the regular ruck pairing, and with Reid and Pink provide height in the Swans' forwardline.

      Academy Players/Topups
In: Bartholomaeus, Parker, Ries, Smith, Thorne, Veerhuis
Out: Mark KANNAN, Luke PARKS, Josh RAYNER, Dominic SOFFE

Flanagan was impressive last week and was named as one of our best six players. Wicks and Stewart have impressed over the course of the season as half-forwards.

      Giants (listed players in bold)
In: WBanuelos, Beaumont, Corbett, Cordell, Haynes, E.Perryman, Taranto, Wilson
Out: Dylan BUCKLEY (injured), Liam DELAHUNTY (omitted), Matthew McGRORY (omitted), Lachlan TANNER (omitted)

At least 4 and maybe up to 6 of the extended bench will be on AFL duty, either playing or as travelling emergency. Taranto and Haynes are certainties to be in that group. Keeffe likely to replace the injured Patton as a tall forward/ruck, and the other 5 all have claims to be given a spot as they have all been playing well in the NEAFL. Whoever is left behind will form the nucleus of their on-ball division.

Of the Giants named on field, Sproule has had some great matchups with Harry Marsh, but with a lack of another tall forward, Maibaum may be the man for him this time. Buntine's usual position is as a third tall defender but has been used in the midfield when the Giants have been short of numbers. Mohr is the most experienced defender and hence a logical choice to mark Reid but Sam's propensity to roam further upfield may see Cumming assigned the task instead.

While Flynn will be filling in for regular number 1 ruck Dawson Simpson, he showed last week he is no slouch in the rucking department, tallying 13 hitouts to advantage against former Melbourne Demon Jake Spencer. One of his strengths is his mobility which will pose an interesting challenge for the in-form Darcy Cameron.

Thanks Ugg, great write up as usual. Looking forward to the game updates.

With half the senior side injured last night there are places up for grabs so I expect those players will be really switched on tomorrow.

Great to finally see Pink after seeing Red yesterday. Swans should win this as Giants are shorthanded and it should be much more enjoyable than last nights garbage.

9 vs 13 then, in our favour albeit some listed players coming back from injury

O'Riordan 13 possessions, 8 marks in the 1Q. Getting around the ground and using it pretty well.

A Giants' defence including Buntine, Mohr, Kennedy and Keeffe is very experienced for NEAFL level.

Has Reid injured himself again? Don't think I saw him after the very early set shot.

Yes, making a pretty good case for promotion, with a handy 67 fantasy points at quarter time. I'm also liking what Bell does when he has the ball. And it's nice to know that Pink still exists.

Great second efforts and tackle pressure by Amartey.

With McVeigh injured and O'Riordan's display of form, next week has to be his debut

Also it sounds like Sam Reid is off injured

Yes, although he seems to be playing more on the ball than in defence.

Now that you've mentioned it, i haven't seen Reid at all in the second quarter. Ugghh: let's just hope he's being conservatively managed.
