    General footy chat Commitment to contracts

    Apparently the Hawks and Brett Ratten have 'both agreed to part ways at the end of the season and Brett will explore other opportunities'.
    Do we believe this?
    Sam Mitchell is coming back to Melbourne with TWO years remaining on his contract with West Coast.
    We all understand that family is the most important thing to everyone, but why commit to 4 years on the other side of the country when it is highly probable that you will not see the contract out. It is not as though he was drafted as an 18 year old and had no other choice.
    Should West Coast hold him (in some capacity, not necessarily in WA) to serve the last 2 years?

      In addition to what I posted above, to have players under contract who then want to leave can benefit both player and club as a trade has to be done (unlike free agency).

          Very, very convenient the Ratten deal imho, but if the Hawks offered him a decent amount of money to leave, then so be it.

          It seems the 'come home' factor doesn't just extend to their playing careers.

              In other industries contracts can be broken and there are penalties, notice periods etc. I sort of get it for players, but don’t see why Mitchell can’t give notice as you would in another job.

              I get the distinct impression he’s a major factor in their midfield performing so well this year, and he’ll be sorely missed.
