The club must really see his coaching potential to commit that long. I assume they know what they're doing but I lean towards external recruiting of coaching staff.
“In addition to his leadership with the team, Jarrad has been an extremely trusted confidante for many years. In 2020, we are very fortunate that Jarrad will join the Sydney Swans coaching panel where he will continue to have a major influence on the club’s next generation of young players.”
Reminded me that when we were secretly recruiting Buddy, only one player was in on it - Macca!
For those who haven’t listened to the podcast of Cal’s conversation with Kieren Jack - Kieren was quite emotional in his praise of Macca’s leadership for the 2016 match against Geelong, in Geelong which we won - at the end of what Kieren described as a ‘@@@@’ week following his parents going public with their grievances about Kieren’s girlfriend, now his wife.
I think Jarrad will be a fine coach. Great footy instinct and strong leadership sense.
There is an article on foxsports about Andrew Dunkley's interview on Open Mike. I would post the link but I seem to recall reading that it stuffs up our formatting so I won't. The most interesting bit is that apparently AD said the reason we didn't match the Bulldogs bid for Josh Dunkley was that we didn't rate him that highly and didn't want to go into points deficit (and not because, as I had understood, there was some kind of a handshake agreement not to match a bid from a Victorian club).

If we genuinely didn’t rate him that highly then that is proving to be a monumental stuff up , Dunkley is absolutely killing it right now and exactly the type of player we are screaming out for. Inside bull. His numbers are comparable to Lachie Neales this year and Neale is on track for a Brownlow. Hope Mills finally gets a chance to show why he was rated so highly . Having a fine season in defence but he was rated one of the top inside midfielders in his draft year and I think we all finally want to see why.

Depends on which article you believe
afl.com.au quotes an unnamed "A recruiter, who wished to remain anonymous and is not affiliated with the Swans or Bulldogs"
"The Swans agreed not to match a bid from a (Victorian) club for him, only if (the bid) came from a side outside Victoria.
but a The Age article addressed this rumour directly and says
Not so, say the Swans. They have had a closer look at Dunkley than any club but the Tigers, and understood his flaws and how he compared to player-types they already had on their list. They had to pitch 30 picks ahead in a not-so-great draft when discussing who might be there, but felt as though they needed to get some good kickers into the club and that they would have options. Tyrone Leonardis offers that, plus some run and creativity. The Swans rated Jordan Dawson's foot skills highly, too.
If you follow the club's official line, the thinking seems to be we were well stocked with inside mids (hello Tom Mitchell) and could do with some outside run.
Thanks ugg. That's a great post gathering together the known intelligence on this topic.

I just watched the Dunkley interview. As usual Mike Sheehan did a great show asking many tough questions to Andrew. I was sad to hear that Dunkley is clearly so distant from the Club that be played over 200 games for and even captained. He described his relationship to the Club as "non-existent" and apparently he did not even attend his induction into the Hall of Fame. For me that was very sad to hear.

Saw a bit of the Dunkley interview with Mike Sheahan. Pretty introverted guy and looks like he still harbours a grudge while protesting that he is blase about the Swans. Very family focused so this probably influenced Josh as well as the Swans.
Just watched it but don’t believe what’s he said in regards to points deficit. Mills had absolutely no deficit in regards to matching a bid on Dunkley. He’d already been matched.
Sydney would have lost its next two picks in Leonardis & Dawson thus being required to use the next years 2nd rounder which had been traded the following year. So would have forgone the next pick used for Maibaum. Sydney would have still gained access to Hayward as he was taken with a priority pick not a 2nd rounder.
So really to gain Dunkley Sydney would have not gained access to Leonardis, Dawson & Maibaum.
I understand why he came up with this story due to the open secret of Sydney and Dunkley agreeing only matching a bid from NSW, SA, WA & Qld clubs. If he’d told the truth it would be draft tampering. Deregistered and put onto the open market which means he’d be packing Josh’s bags for the Gold Coast.
I loved Dunks as a player but he came off as a bitter person who hadn’t planned for retirement.
I agree Boddo. I really liked Dunkley as a player. He was the Jeremy McGovern of the day essentially. Just as good.
He was fairly guarded in the interview, but it seems his disengagement from the club comes from his not accepting
that his time was up as a player, and he is still carrying the grudge 17 years down the track. It's highly likely his
footballer sons noticed his reticence about the Swans over the years.
It was telling when Andrew was giving answers of "maybe" to questions of attending future club functions, that Mike took it as a "NO" which Andrew didn't protest. I was taken aback when he said he was happy for the 16 players he played with when they won the 2005 flag but not for the club. I had no idea of Andrew's grudge until recently & surprised by it, because he was sitting about 6 rows in front of me at the 2012 GF amongst all the Swans fans and he seemed to be enjoying chatting to them (I took photos of him).
Like Kevin Bartlett who reconciled with the RFC after many years post his coach sacking, that Andrew will eventually do the same post this interview.
