    Nankervis to co-captain the Tigers:

Richmond announce Grimes, Nankervis as co-captains

Just goes to show, I would not have picked him as future captain material during his Swans years. I think maybe players and teams are just the "wrong fit" sometimes, as in any workplace.

He was young, overlooked in the draft in his u18 year, and not an early draft pick the year we took him. He was trying to work out his football, his body and his place in the game.

Do you think the Hawks had a young Josh Kennedy pegged as a future captain during his time there? How about Jack's early years at the Swans? Kirk and Rampe didn't even find their way onto a list until their early 20s, let alone seem as if they might be future captains.

To your point about Jack, on the weekend I was listening to a Dylan Buckley podcast from last year where he interviewed Brandon Jack. Dylan spoke about when he was playing in Sydney there was a session where current AFL players came and spoke. One of them was Kieran Jack. It was Jack's first year and Dylan had no idea who he was. Jack introduced himself as a player for the Sydney Swans and said that he was going to be captain one day!

So, you agree with neilfws that Nankervis didn't seem like captaincy material at first?

While it's true that many captains will not have seemed like captaincy material before going on to become good captains (Goodsey is another that comes to mind), there are others who do scream captaincy material from the outset - like Mills and Gulden or Sam Walsh at Carlton.

This reminds me that (I think) Parker mentioned in one of the podcasts that Chad was saying he would be a future captain from the moment he walked in the door. (Bangalore, you might @@@@@ your ears up at this one!)

Good luck to him, and good on the AFL for being a sport that deals with it so well and openly.

Yep, we’ve come a good way in a few years. I would hope that the AFL’s shameful disregard of Adam Goodes’ mental health at the time is an embarrassing relic of a bygone time.

I'm in Adelaide for a few days. I'm wondering whether I should visit West Lakes on Monday morning and heckle Dawson. Hmmmm.

Anyone have any better suggestions? Has SANFL footy started yet?

That’s quite disrespectful to a person who has given you as a supporter all he had from 2016-2021.
