Sam Naismith tracking well for next season.....this from the weekends NEAFL game.
"Sam Naismith was important in the final quarter as the Swans came back from 27 points down to keep their season alive.
The big man was influential in some crucial contests, kicked a goal and had 47 hitouts."

Getting our team list right for 2021 !!!
Caldwell and Daniher strategy while retaining paps and jones plus we we upgrade picks to only have two draft picks say 20 and 25. Ie we only need 4 players coming on the Swans AFL top38 list
For every move you make building a football player list there is an advantage, risk and potentially some serious downside.
We are very lucky that we still have ONE more season on our side in our rebuild. Ie most of the media, sponsors and fans will probably give the swans one more season to rebuild due to the age and inexperience of our list plus the recent retirement of seriously key players. Most people are smart enough to understand the cycles of football list management and the ups and downs.
So that means we don’t have to have all key players and or key recruits performing next year. We have some flexibility in recruiting injury prone players like Hawthorn have done successfully and give them time in a rebuild year.
If targeted players are recovering from injury etc and there are a couple players managing injuries for next season it’s not a big deal. We will in my opinion be a better team next year anyway organically and notch up a few more wins due to our evolving young players.
Ie 3 more wins next year gets us to equal 9th on the ladder and that appears about right Re progression and trajectory of building as a team list organically.
Getting our list right and ready for 2021, 2022,2023 in my opinion is absolutely critical and dominates our short term decisions including this trade and draft period.
2018/19 - we lost massive experience and important players for over a decade ie macca, hannes, Grundy, Jack, Smith, Tippett etc
At the end of 2020/21 we loose Kennedy
End of 2022 we loose buddy and rampe?
So lesser quantity of retiring players etc next 3 years in comparison to the last cycle we went through 2017/18/19.
Back Line - I’m happy with the current group of players and depth and the run and carry speed we trying to build with Ling, Stoddart, McInerny, AA, Colin, Reynolds etc etc plus our go to exit players in Lloyd and Dawson etc are a nice compliment and effective.
Forward Line - If we want the best from an ageing buddy and underwhelming Sam Reid and we want the best from our forward line in general through 2020/21/22 we need to take it to the next level with a serious target.
In my opinion it is an extremely difficult challenge to get a key forward here in Sydney at the right price and at the right time. The timing and price are usually a massive compromise.
Midfield - Right now we have a Ruck / clearance problem but I feel with the addition of Heeney, Papley and Mills rolling thru our midfield more often we can get a better mix with our midfield rotation.......but another seriously emerging midfielder with rowbottom would set us up.......but we need more options with our Ruck so we can at least get 50/50 on the clearances. We can’t rely solely on Naismith , sinkers and or Knoll etc.
————
OPTIONS for 2020 to set up 2021 and beyond:
1. Jye Caldwell - we give up pick 4 and pick 20 to GwS for draft pick 11 and Jye Caldwell. This is a player that GWS can not afford now with Caniglio, kelly, hopper, Taranto Whitfield etc and I truly believe he could be a 200 game player at the Swans and perfect for our midfield. Second preseason this year coming and ready to rock ! Jye is a better midfield prospect then the picks 4-10 in the draft this year and he is ready ! Then we use pick 11 for another trade ie Daniher ? We still keep Paps and Jones
2. keep paps, Jones and trade pick 4 to gws for Jye Caldwell and still get Joe Daniher to the Swans via next years first round pick say 8 ? This would be ideal to maintain our midfield rotation and give us a seriously dangerous forward line rotation plus we probably have close to the funds after the 4 boys retired this year but what do the bombers want if at all ?
Buddy
Daniher
Reid
Heeney
Papley
Dawson
Hayward
McCartin
Etc
3. PLAN C - trade pick 4 and pick 20 for Daniher and essendons future first round pick 10? But Paps and Jones etc stay.
4. PLAN D - trade Jones for Daniher plus a pick swap ie pick 20 or slightly better maybe a future approx pick 8-10 for next year ? A fully fit Daniher gives our best 22 way more upside then keeping Jones staying.
5. Plan E - use pick 4ish in the draft but there isn’t much upside in that in comparison as the serious talent and “AFL ready talent” appears to be the top3 picks

Common Stevie J earn ur money !!! Get Jye Caldwell to the Swans !

This is worth a look. McInerny in full flight in the two's elimination final and tops it off with a brilliant goal. Exciting future in the one's for this kid.

But happy to see stats of Sam reid vs other 10 season CHFs at other clubs maybe In another post re Sam Reid ?
I thought Sam Reid should average 30 plus goals per season over 10 yrs especially with the advantage of playing with Buddy who last 4/5 years has attracted the no1 defender from the opposition.
Sam only twice in ten years has scored 30 plus goals and well under 30 the other 8 seasons and averaged only 14 goals per season ????
For me that is underwhelming for a key forward, but this season at 27 years of age he definitely level jumped his previous season stats across the board"be tough, only when it gets tough"

Sam has played every position on the field . Ruck, forward, CHB,wing, drink waiter....
He shouldn't be judged on the number of goals.
And ,at 27, he's got a long way to go. Clearly one of our best this year.Comment

Reid has been really versatile and good defensively over his career and done what is asked of him. And he's had numerous good games and deserves a place in our best 22. Despite that, overall I feel underwhelmed by his output and to call him "clearly one of our best this year" is too much for me.All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)Comment

Interesting criteria for assessment RUTB
I suppose we all see a players stats differently?
Most CHFs in the AFL have to play both ends of the field and in the Ruck.......I can’t think of hardly one AFL CHF who hasn’t played a similar role as Sam ?
Maybe underwhelming prior to this season was a fairer assessment...... as I acknowledged he jumped up in all stats this season
But Sam is certainly not “overwhelming” or elite and he has had so many seasons at underwhelming and or neutral"be tough, only when it gets tough"

Agree with that. Sam is Mr.Fixit, plays more time away from CHF, always clunking marks in the backline, on the wing, being an outlet point. One of the first picked each week.Comment
