2019 trading, drafting and list management: players and personnel

Having said that, you can't go wrong with a top rated contested ball winner.Comment

Away from the draft, possible inside mid trade targets include Brayden Sier (Collingwood - can the Pies afford to retain him as well as everyone else?) and Will Brodie (Gold Coast - still not best 22 (which is a worry) but was a top 10 pick and might be worth a go in a fresh environment?). What do others (who have probably seen more of them than I) think of these players? Any better suggestions?
Sure, Fyfe, Cripps or Bontempelli would be great but I also think completely unrealistic. Even Macrae and Hunter from Bulldogs are probably out of reach. Who could we get?All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)Comment

I’m wondering our options Re trading and picks?
We will have st kildas 2nd round pick that could be in the range of pick 20-28
Plus we will have a top8 pick most likely and another second round pick which may provide a chance to go hard for a key player who can’t be matched for $ and wants to stay in Sydney or move here ? Plus potentially do a hawthorn and use a first round or second round pick for the next year ?
Money freeing up ?
Macca
Grundy
Jack
Reid ?
Smith will stay on a smaller contract is my guess with his age and injury and speed slowing not great timing for him ......plus young guys getting some game time in 2019 but smithy at his best is important
Clarke and Thurlow I wonder if they signed for one year or two ?
Menzel - only one year but if injury free he is important
Sad but true, but he won't be here for the next premiership and he is taken up the spot for a younger player.
That and his contract: all of Grundy, Smith, Jack, McVeigh, and hopefully Reid should retire or be move on.
This way we can clean out Bundy's final years of his contract.
Maybe that will raise $2.5 million: we just need to make sure we are not spending it on Clark etc!
Getting rid of Hannas was a great move, but lets spend the money on elite players.
Not third rung players so Longmire can say he always make the finals!doof-doofComment

It’s just stupid, lazy journalism to rate ours an E based on Clarke and Thurlow - they cost us nothing really, and at worst will be handy depth players.Comment

In terms of the angle Caro is pushing, I can definitely see it is an awkward position Longmire is in.
Clearly we are suffering from some average list management decisions over the past couple of years, which rationally would push you to accept dropping down the ladder a bit to mount another challenge.
But Longmire has a new CEO who not only would be ambitious to maintain success, and desperate to maintain the revenue that comes with it, but is also the same person who was ultimately responsible for the list management that is now brought into question.
So Longmire isn’t going to get much sympathy from Harley, and it’s awkward for him to blame list management when justifying himself to the Board who would have to be backing in their choice as CEO.
He also now has the most inexperienced Football Manager probably in the history of the game (in terms of footy admin) who appears to be a Harley ‘captains pick’. He might bring legal and commercial acumen to the role, but that doesn’t really help Longmire much at this point.
It was oddly specific the way Longmire was repeatedly quoting the age profile of our list prior to the season starting - in hindsight that was really code for “you’ll know why when we take a step back this year, but I’m not allowed to say it”.Comment

So we've been rated an E for the off season trading. Hard to argue with that.
Gave away Rohan who has been electric for Geelong and Newman who right now we wished he was doing what he's doing at Carlton he was doing at the Swans. Got an empty chips packet for both. Hanneberry we also got little for in the final wash up unless Saints finish bottom four.
Recruited Clarke and Thurlow, the former looks a bust and Thurlow at this stage is just hanging in there but most are unconvinced he is a long termer.
So I'm happy with an E, must have been close to an F!Comment

Our current predicament was the focus on all the Monday night footy shows yesterday, which I haven't seen in a while. They all acknowledged we've done so well to have stayed up for so long, but the equalisation measures would eventually catchup with us. Our list was analysed with the consesus we have a lot of under 24 players who have the potential to become A graders and so every chance we'll bounce back quickly. Paul Roos only criticism is that we're throwing players around too much and not allowing them to solidify in the one position. He cited McCartin, Allir, Heeney & Jones as examples. Roos thinks Lomgmire is trying to plug too many holes all over the ground at once and is better off settling one area of the ground at a time.Comment

Over to you Horse.....Comment

You can only recruit willing players. We had a crack at some good ones but they stayed where they were. Hardly Tom Harley or anyone else's fault.
We've made a conscious decision to rebuild, just need to ride it out and be patient. Bottom three is fine with me, better draft picks, soft draw in 2020.
Also need Horse to do as Roos has suggested and what many on here think, find the right position for a player and let them develop into it. Season is gone, back in promising young talent and don't worry about ladder position.
We'll get a very high draft pick this year to add to stocks.Comment

I reckon the draw is a huge factor in clubs yo-yo-ing up and down the ladder in recent years. And as 707 suggests another incentive to finish down the ladder.Comment

Look I know we are rebuilding. Regenerating. But I would prefer the coach tryst the players instead of playing Dawson and Reid as extras in defence. Manage the Damage is crap. We were attacking last week and he sent both back and they kicked 6 goals. Great.
We have the players as young as thry are.
