But his short kicking through the midfield is too error prone to be elite and it's an area we really need to improve. Also, he doesn't win one on one marking contests.

I don't understand the bad wrap Jones gets for his kicking. The last three games his disposal efficiency has been 85% (2nd in team), 94.7% (1st in team), 84% (5th in team). Even in the Carlton game he wasn't our worst.
I would be sad to see him go.
When I was watching the game on Saturday, I had recorded it and not watched it live. I knew the result so I was in a different state of mind. When we turned the ball over and once or twice it was Jones going short, instead of getting cross about it I then watched if GWS were doing the same thing. They were and this included a lot of their established players. As a keen supporter, it is easy to get upset about particular players when their perceived faults are common across the whole competition. Jones has a lot of good qualities and he would be badly missed IMO. Can remember when Leo Barry was a whipping boy for Swans supporters early on in his career. Adam Goodes also had a lot of detractors in his first few years. Need to take the emotion out of it at times.

FWIW Sam MacLure on SEN has reported Joe Daniher was seen having lunch with Tom Harley in Sydney last week. EFC were aware of meeting beforehand & comfortable with it. Joe was in Sydney to see same surgeon that operated on Menzel & Buddy's groins. Sam is speculating that Joe might be wanting to escape the Melbourne bubble & the Swans looking for a long term replacement for Buddy. He thinks the meeting is significant. Joe has another year left on his contract to run (2020).

Ironic that Joe could have decided to come to us from the outset as a F/S selection. Personally, I would have thought both Blakely & McCartin would make adequate long time replacements for both Buddy & Reid, even though there is potential for Blakey to develop into a Bontempeli type midfielder & McCartin to play down back. Having both Reid & Daniher lack of goal kicking accuracy sounds interesting!

He is probably the Bombers most important player - they'd want the whole house for him. Definitely worth having a real crack at if we thought he could get his body right, he will be a star.

He essentially hasn't played for two years, though. There must be a question mark over whether his style of play - ie the things that could make him a very dangerous player (and have done, at times) - is sustainable for a man of his build. As you say, Essendon would want a lot for him, trade wise. It would be a huge risk, especially for a position that probably isn't the greatest priority at the moment since we still have one bona-fide superstar and a couple of promising up and coming tall players in our forward line.

I see our main requirements this draft as being 1) pure inside mid, followed by a genuine tap ruck (which we can trade for). I think a genuine KPD such as McAsey would be handy as well given that there is some uncertainty in our current KPD's. I'm a fan of Melican and Maibaum but one is struggling for form and the other is injured and hasn't been given the opportunity yet.

As far as inside mids go I don't mind the look of Brodie Kemp, 1/5/21, (Bendigo Pioneers/Vic Country). He sounds very versatile. His ACL is a bit of a risk though, especially for our high pick. He made the AA side too.

            Position: Inside midfielder / Utility
            Size: 192cm, 82kg
Brodie Kemp - Aussie Rules Draft Central
I see him as starting in defence and moving into the midfield in a few years. He and Rowbottom would solve our inside mid needs.

If true that’s huge! I wonder what they’d want in return. If he can get his body right, it’s a huge if, he’s the potential to be the best fwd in the game.

I don’t think McCartin or Blakey do. Think Blakey will be an exceptional player just not key position

Apparently Harley is a long time mentor to Daniher. Essendon comfortable with it. McClure feeding bomber supporters' neuroses. Nothing in it I reckon.

I have a story about Daniher from a few years back (circa 2014). I got to know his father, Anthony, who played for the Swans back in the 1980s during a Daniher's Drive fundraising event. We were talking about the Swans and how he still had a soft spot for the Swans all of these years later. The subject got to his son and he said that it had been a close decision by him to choose the Bombers over the Swans in 2010. He went on to say that the subsequent drugs scandal and fallout from it over several seasons had taken it's toll on Jo. It had even make him think that maybe he had made the wrong choice in the first place. Now obviously things have picked up for the Bombers since then but there is definitely some feeling for the Swans there. Stranger things have happened in football!

Daniher is a RFA in 2020. That would be a good time to make a play for him, if required. Daniher makes a pretty good ruckmen too.

Daniher would be very risky given his persistent groin injuries, plus he wouldn't come cheap either.

Just did a quick look on google too, his older brother (Darcy) retired from AFL at 21 due to... persistent groin injuries.

What I take from that is the Daniher was ripe for the picking a few years back, but because of Tippett (!) we didnt have the cap room.
                        Damn you kurt!

Might be trying to make a play for him as a “Pre Agent”

Don't blame Kurt. The story is that had Daniher chosen us instead of the injectors we wouldn't had done the Budwa deal. So blame Daniher for us not getting Daniher and I suspect the Budmeister has been better value anyway. (Daniher must be ruing his decision. Years in a club from hell when he could have been playing finals with us.
Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.

                              Quote from Horse's presser today

"We’re exploring how Tom McCartin goes down back and what we’re doing with Jordan Dawson, Oliver Florent and Hayden McLean."

Dawson I know has been played everywhere and was back v GWS. McCartin played quite well down back in the same game ... and I wonder if he's being groomed for Melican's spot. Thoughts what he means re: Ollie and McLean?

McLean is not tall enough to be a number one AFL ruckman, but having seen him the last few weeks looks a likely forward/ruck, seems to have ability and footy smarts so reckon that may be what is referred to there.

Smart trying out McCartin down back, particularly if we try McLean forward.

                                Ollie, HBF?

Dawson, can we clone him? He is so promising and deadly I reckon just leave him on a wing and he can do as he pleases drifting back and forward, does everything well, looks composed and good footy brain.

If everyone was fit, who is in our best 22 and where do they play? Surely we move Mills into midfield next year?

I'm all for making a play for Keith KPD and being low balled by the Crows.
