A lot of people on here like to knock Stevie J. I'm no expert on coaching, but I will point out that against Essendon we had 22 scoring shots from 41 inside 50s (they had 54). It was our efficiency going inside 50, with a ridiculously young forward line, that won us the match.

The week before, we had 21 scoring shots from 40 inside 50s and scored 81 points. They had 77 inside 50s for 33 scoring shots and 103 points. If they had been as efficient as us, they would have scored 156 points and we would have lost by 75 points.

I think he's doing OK with what he's got to work with.

I think Stevie has one problem with our forward line, Buddy.
Both of them are masters of the art of kicking freakish goals and I feel that Stevie is in awe of Buddy and his talent. He can't really work with Buddy on the key requirements of forward because Buddy has rewritten a fair amount that. Sometimes I feel that Buddy is not sure of what he going to do next.
Stevie should be focused on McCartin, Blakey and Reid and developing them into a power group, his next group needs to be creating goal hungry small forwards with Tom and Ben.
He should be encouraging those two to take their chance if they are within thier range rather than look for Buddy. Tom and Ben could develop into a pair that can get 45 to 60 goals a year.

The main concern is the mids coaching, happy to see Kirk go somewhere else.

It’s where we are being slaughtered every week. How much of that is coaching and how much personnel I don’t know, but we need to get better at it.

Tom Browne on Triple M Melb just reported Collingwood are trying lure to Steve J from Sydney as their assistant coach next year, as his Sydney contract expires this year.

I don't mean to be critical of the relevance of this topic but the simple fact is that none of us are in a position to critic any of our assistant coaches because we have no idea about what goes on in the inner workings of our coaches group and are no position to judge.

Couldn't agree more. Rowell and Anderson are currently a mile ahead of anyone else in this years draft with Rowell being better than Anderson, albeit being different types of midfielders. Rowell being a pure inside mid and Anderson being the outside mid.

Our list is screaming out for Rowell who would come straight into our team come round one next season. He would immediately improve us. If we need to finish last for one year whilst developing our team in a season when we have no chance of being premiers then we should do it.

100% agree. Short term pain for long term gain!

It feels weird and a little bittersweet having a win because I genuinely want and feel we need one of the top 2 picks in the upcoming November draft!

We desperately need that high quality young midfielder that will be available at those couple of picks!

Haven't had to worry about thinking like this for many years as I was always happy to at least make finals and hope for the best but I think it's pretty clear that we won't be making it this year, even after the win last night against an admittedly equally poor Essendon. It almost seems a little detrimental winning a few of these games here and there and finishing 13th of 14th... Sacrilege I know! [emoji51]

I understand your reasoning but history has shown that this is most often a failed approach. Perhaps this year is different with Rowell and Anderson but most years the recruiters have got it wrong. That is, the number 1 and 2 picks don't end up being easily the best players.

Eg:

2013 Tom Boyd Pick 1. I'd prefer Cripps who went 13 or Bont who went 4. Josh Kelly went 2 which is good.
2014 McCartin Pick 1, Petracca Pick 2. De Goey 5.
2015 Weitering Pick 1, Schache Pick 2. Oliver 4, Hopper 7
2016 McGrath Pick 1, Taranto 2. They probably got this right but it is early.

A culture of winning or at least competitiveness is more important in my opinion. Therefore, I'd rather finish 14th than 18th and get both a high pick as well as a few wins into our young players.

KPF taken high are surprisingly often busts but mids taken high are much safer bets.

Take out the KPF from the above lists and it looks a much different picture, Heeney would have been pick 2 in 2014, Mills (playing out of position) pick 3 in 2015, McCluggage who is turning into a gun pick 3 in 2016, Walsh pick 1 2018 etc

Top tips for this year are all mids, time to get the snout in the trough!

Brown feels Dunkley, who was eligible as a father-son pick by Sydney last year, could be an AFL standard player for a decade. “I know who I’d take, we saw him play last Sunday and it was Kyle Dunkley,” Brown told SEN’s Time On. “He’s Josh Dunkley’s brother who was overlooked by Sydney last year, could have gone father-son, now they want him six months later, but he is open for the draft. He kicked three goals. He’s a footballer, there’s no doubt about that."

“There’s plenty of good talent floating around in all state league competitions, I think if you’re Carlton and you’re looking position specific, you might be looking for a small forward in Sam Lowson or something like that, but he would be a guy I’d go for. You could potentially have a really good footballer for the next decade.”

Brown broke down what to expect from Dunkley if he is picked up by a club.

“He plays half forward. He’s very similar to Josh (Dunkley) in a way, he’s a solid enough build, pretty smart footballer, knows his way around the forward line,” he said. “He was courageous a couple of times, takes gutsy marks back with the flight. He was a real standout against a pretty good Box Hill side. They’ve got a lot of mature age guys. He held his own against those guys.”

Dunkley starred in Footscray’s draw with Box Hill, kicking three goals from 11 disposals.

I don't think a disposal count is particularly important for a forward who is kicking goals, particularly if they are also effective in applying forward half pressure and in setting up goals for others.

That said, I am not sure a half-forward is really what the team needs, certainly not in the short term (with Menzel hopefully to be available soon). Maybe whoever is recruited will be with an eye to the longer term. Who knows. Even then, I think genuine midfielders should be more of a priority.

One thing that I noticed about Menzel on the weekend, is that he seems to have made himself really popular around the club. When he kicked his first goal, all of the side lined up to congratulate him; even the kids playing deep in defence.
