AMT was rookie drafted as a 22 yo. So there are those players out there if you've got a sharp recruiting team, which I think we have. In fact, Tom Papley was just such a find.
I can't see AMT leaving Essendon. He's just too popular with the fans. In any case, we've got a lot young talented small forwards already in the system, although some, like Hayward, are out of form atm. There is a Tipungwuti playing for the NT Thunder and maybe a few others playing local footy in the NT.
A player that might be worth targeting is Mabior Chol from Richmond. I wouldn't be surprised if he knows Aliir Aliir, both being Sudanese refugees with Queensland connections. Chol was drafted from Aspley. He's tall enough to legitimately play ruck, but as a forward he's behind Lynch, Riewoldt and probably Noah Balta, and wouldn't be playing except that Balta and Nankervis are both injured. As a rookie, he's on a very low salary, so may be someone we could throw some money at.
Of course you can find these players in the draft , same can be said of any type of player. Fact is he’s a gun, and you add him to papley , even without buddy , that’s a dangerous forward setup to feed off the crumbs of Reid and mccartin. Throw in a medium like Hayward who can take a grab and do it at ground level ( or a Menzel ) and that’s a scary setup for the opposition. Add buddy , look out !
Yes he’d be hard to get , but I’d like to see us try .

Our picks at the present.
Our second round pick from St Kilda is looking good at the moment.
Still we need to trade some player out to get picks.
And also retire players to get our salary cap under control.
Indicative draft order after round 17

SYD 22 Sydney Swans
SYD 41 Sydney Swans

Picking up a ready to go midfielder that can genuinely improve our ability to win the clearances should be a key focus in terms of any trading we might look to undertake. Perhaps a ruckmen too should be on the list, but you can have the best ruckman in the land but it'll mean nothing if the midfield group isn't good enough. Sadly the signs are there to suggest Kennedy's decline may have begun, and it'll leave a lot on the shoulders of Parker, plus our younger emerging mids if we don't try and fill the gap somehow."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

Rarely is the solution looking at what a new or existing player can do at their best
So often it is what unique qualities do they have that enables us to be more flexible and more effective with our game plan
If u look at the stats on the weekend in a close game we played against Carlton the top 5 players as per the tracker stats for total distance covered were:
Walsh
Curnow
Plowman
SPS
Fisher
5 Carlton players in the top 5 and lead by a seriously inspiring 18yr old !!!!
So the question is where will our run come from on a bad day? Ie it was a day to difficult to kick long so it was a game plan evenly matched in short movements via hand or foot but the overlapping “RUN” separated the men from the boys
Where will our gut runners come from ?
The AFL is requiring more triathletes then muscle in the way they are adjusting the game
Do we have enough run in our team when that is all that can be done in the conditions like Saturday vs Carlton ?
No we didn’t !!!
The stats show it and we saw it.
Yes our work around the tap was critical but we have had to play NNN and Sandilands etc in the past where we marked our man on the outside and won.
We just didn’t have enough run to close the gap
Both teams missed enough sitters in front but only one team ran till their hearts and lungs burnt
Do we have the running men to be a serious team ?
I don’t think we do"be tough, only when it gets tough"

I’m not saying he ( AMT) would solve all our woes but I’d have him in our side any day and I think we could afford to offer him more than Essendon could. One of our major struggles is with scoring. Certainly I’d love to get someone like a Sier from Collingwood as well to bolster our inside midfield stocks ( although I don’t think he will leave ) , and maybe an experienced ruckman depending on whether Naismith looks likely to get back in the park anytime soon. Assuming Cameron will request a trade . Could we get a couple of good years out of a Paddy rider or Sauce Jacobs ? I think with a few astute pickups to add to our young talented side we’ll be right back in the mix ( for finals , not necessarily the flag ) next season.Comment

ATM isn't going to happen, if you know his backstory (which is really interesting) he followed his adoptive mother back to Victoria from the NT as a teenager and is very close to her. I doubt he's going to pack up and move to Sydney.
In any event we don't need a permanent forward who has gone goalless in about 8 of his matches this year when we are a struggling team. Sier on the other hand is exactly the type we should be after.
Our ruck situation is embarrassing considering we have 4 on our list (5 if you include McClean) and the coaches consider only 1 of them to be AFL standard ( I don't count Naismith who hasn't been on the park for 2 seasons). It is a horrible indictment on our recruiting that we find ourselves in this situationComment

I don't think the Swans have a problem at any particular position, unless we consider youth to be a problem. The Swans are going as expected this year (at least for me) and I don't expect there to be an immediate fix this offseason, because there really isn't anything to fix. It's more a matter of having our young players develop into a cohesive unit.
There's always uncertainty with a young group, because you don't know what their ceiling will be. If we take Hayward as an example, he's in poor goal kicking form this year, but if he regains his good kicking form, he could be one of the best medium forwards in the AFL. We've gots lots of players in the reserves who might develop into stars, solid role players, or delisted in the next year or so. It's just too early to tell.
After this year, when we will retire a slew of older players, we really have very few oldies on our list. Our older experienced players will be dropping off our list in a trickle, while we will be adding quality players (we've been going at better than 3 a year) through the draft, hence continually increasing the depth of our list. It's a slow process, and we should be at an ebb this current season and begin to move up the latter again next year with a modicum of good fortune.
I don't think we will add a gun established player in this year's trade period, but hope we can recruit at least one solid player to add to our midfield depth.

I had a thought a few minutes ago. Melbourne is a team with an oversupply of quality inside mids and perhaps a little bit of a lack on the outside. They also must have a fairly tight salary cap given their amazing list. (I reckon their list is amazing despite their terrible season. In fact it is their lack of success despite their amazing list that makes their season so awful.) We have a quality outside mid (who can go inside too) who has ties to Melbourne (the city and the football club) and we have a need for more quality inside mids. Is there potential for a deal that would see us get any one of Viney, Brayshaw, Oliver or Petracca? They are all A-grade mids that could really help us. They are all a perfect age/experience profile for our needs. We would probably have to pay a bit more than Z.Jones but is there scope for some kind of a deal here? Could any of them be lured to come to Sydney? Would Zak come to the party if the deal could be done? Are we better off keeping Jones and targetting someone else? Personally, I would be willing to trade Jones + Saints 2nd round pick for any of those players but I don't follow the Demons really closely. All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)Comment
