    The pundits at the Roar think we had the best result at the draft given the picks we had and highlighted the thinking behind our draft process

      We always win at the draft table... even when we are restricted.
      Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
      Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.

        I expect 37 to be kept vacant next year. 40 could go to Rowles, a rookie.

        The other players needing numbers: Gould, Stephens, Elijah Taylor, Lewis Taylor, Warner. (Remember, we acquired two Taylors during the trading and draft period.)

        Possible numbers:
        1 = Warner
        2 = L. Taylor
        3 = Stephens (obvious choice)
        10 = Gould
        17 = E. Taylor (close enough to 19)
        What will be will be.

          But once he got into the right environment at an AFL club, was good to go
          What do they expect. The week before he had just won a premiership with Glenelg.

            15, 28, 39, 40 and 47 are also available. Swans historically announced the numbers much later than most clubs. In practice, the numbers should have been assigned early for logistic reasons. Records and files have to be created and lockers have to be assigned when they start training... Anyway my guess will be #1 = Gould (Roos, Hall); #2= Gray (Davis,Shaw); #3 = Stevens (McVeigh) ;#10 = Warner (Jones); #15 = ET (Jack); #17= BOC (Tadhg); #28 =Taylor (his old number!); #39 = Brand (Grundy); #40= Rowles (Smith)

              You have outlined logical choices Aaron unless personal preferences come into it.

                According to the AFL site, we have the second least experienced list, with an average tally of games played of 55.6. Age wise, we are equal second youngest. Strangely, Brisbane, Fremantle and us, all have an average age of 23.54. In both cases, Gold Coast were the youngest/least experienced.

                Also, according to their table, we have 45 players on our list.

                  Whoops, that should be; third least experienced, not second.

                    Averages can be deceiving but we do now have a very young list with only Buddy 33 this year and JPK 31 this year over 30. We are entering an exciting period.

                      Yes, make the eight this year, and I would be very optimistic about our future.

                      Just going back to the number on our list being 45. I thought that I'd check that. The list on Footy Wire has 45 players; but they're missing Barry O'Connor. Are international rookies left off the official list, for some reason?

                      If the AFL site didn't include O'Connor, or another player, that they should have included, then that would make our averages slightly lower.

                        yep
                        it is an interesting cycle we started moving into last year
                        I sense that last year was the bottom but how fast we start to move op again... from 15th on the ladder.... is the question for me
                        I suppose it is in part, relative to what cycle other teams are in also
                        not many of us sat down at watched all the recruit videos of the other teams no doubt

                        where are the other key teams at like GWS, Richmond, Geelong, Hawks, West Coast, Bulldogs etc

                        When we watch our team play them in 2020, will we be filled with joy and optimism or forum like frustration and doubt about how we traded vs drafted ?

                        The 2019 draft and trade period will no doubt be a defining year in the cycle we are in. Given the options we finally had via a pick 5 currency that could be used in a variety of ways and players that we could traded in or out etc

                        I must admit I hadnt thought about drafting two players like Stephens and Gould that are probably quite ready to be in the 22 in 2020 ie via their age ie finished school 2018 and giving them experience of playing SANFL in 2019..........their upside in 2020 could well beyond my expectation coming into the draft.......lets see how relative that is to other key teams

                            I'll bet O'Connor isn't included in our list number.

                              If we pretend that he's not there, will be able to throw another academy kid on to our list?

                                Interesting scrap of post-draft news - on draft day Kinnear Beatson approached Freo to talk to them about a possible trade: Behind the Draft part 1: The calm before the storm - fremantlefc.com.au. I wonder if this could have been to see if they were interested in trading up to pick 5 in return for pick 7 and something else? Could we have figured that Dyl Stephens would still be available at pick 7 and we could improve our draft position a bit? Will we ever find out? I won't hold my breath. Great series of behind the scenes videos from Freo. Wish we could see the same for the Swans. Again, I won't deprive the trees of my CO2.
