In fairness it was the only thing to do - if he went on the next day and acted as though nothing happened he'd be criticised, but if he continued to address it by adding to his apology or tried to explain further it would have inevitably gone further downhill given it is Eddie.Comment

Even the media were fooled in the way they reported it, buying into the 'taken himself off the air' line as though it was a punishment or done out acknowledgement of what he'd one, out of respect etc. Instead of the self-preservation and avoidance that it was.

a broadcast away from saying something stupid again. In his own little world, he's considered successful and because he's made
a few dollars he falls into the common trap of equating that with meaning something more than being a bit more driven
than the next guy to try make a few bucks.Comment

Just saw Seven News report on the 'Eddie' latest.....he's again apologised on camera and has apparently written Cynthia Banham a letter of apology. All this after being rightfully publicly pillored.....it would be just nice if he had a brain and didn't belittle or bully anyone in the first place.
Should we start a book on when he next puts his foot in his mouth and shows us all he has yet again not learnt a thing.....?Comment

There's a pretty good chance that he will do it again. Like everybody else I saw the toss of the coin, saw the person was disabled and the coin toss was a bit wonky - but who cares. It's just a coin toss. It would never occur to me to make a comment about it. I was watching Ch 7 and there were no comments about it. So why Maguire? He is not a funny guy but thinks he is a funny guy. He trying to ingratiate himself with the boys club by making funny comments - which aren't funny. He is a tool and a cowboy - he needs to engage his brain before he opens his mouth. The AFL puts a lot of publicity into being inclusive but Maguires shoot from the hip comments show there is really a long way to go.

On the "Back Page" last night I thought Adam Spencer got it right when he said everyone makes mistakes on TV such as what Eddie did (believing his version of events), but added the problem with Eddie was his first attempt at apologising on the night came across as shallow and insincere. Had he apologised like he did yesterday morning on his MMM radio show, then he would've been fine.Comment

You'd think he'd have had enough practice apologising by now to get it right first time.Comment

Which was the same problem with his Goodes gaffe. His first apology was a non-apology. He finally managed something close to an unqualified apology late in the evening, but only after we'd had to put up with him on every footy news show justifying why the comment wasn't really his fault. Had he just put out a proper apology in a written statement straightaway, and then withdrawn from his broadcasting duties for a period of time (given that he attributed his blunder to being tired and overworked), it would have been much easier to forgive him.

Yep, his first reaction when he realises he's made a gaffe is one of self preservation rather than honest empathy towards the unintended victim, which comes way too late after the damage has been done.Comment
