Would the same rivals also be filthy if Carlton finish bottom again and secure this player after getting Sam Walsh last year, if they had the opportunity to do so? Would the same rivals be filthy if Richmond or Hawthorn snared this player?
Sydney was slapped with a ban, lost cola when they followed the rules. Gil was quoted as saying that Sydney can't have everyone, obviously he was wrong and should have said that you can't have anyone. This makes my blood boil.

And on the COLA front ; interesting to see Brett Deledio saying last week he thought the Sydney teams needed COLA as
it is very expensive living here. His comments were met with silence of course. What would Brett know? Having moved his family from
Melbourne to Sydney in the last couple years. Carlton can have the number one draft pick. I think I'd back our coaching & development
staff to turn number 5 (or whoever we end up with) into a much better footballer in the long run.

I wouldn't be surprised if we do end up with the spoon. We aren't playing well enough for long enough and key stats (such as inside 50's) have been abysmal all year.
Hopefully, if this is to be the year of the rebuild, the coaching staff get games into all the fringe players to see who can cut it at the highest level (eg Rose, Cameron and COR) and play players in their actual positions (eg Mills).

His record is better than Roos only because Roos spent 3 years rebuilding Melbourne. I agree re fair weather supporters, I saw one final in the first 35 years of my life and it never stopped me attending games. I'm not a huge fan of Longmire's defensive mindset or the way he handles new players but he is a decent coach.
I disagree he has overachieved. He should have won in '14 and '16.

IT would be a classic Sydney drafting manoeuvre — missing the finals for the first time in a decade and snaring a No.1 overall draft pick who is reminiscent of club legend Paul Kelly.

Sydney’s slump to the bottom of the ladder after seven rounds has them in contention for a player who would instantly rebuild their midfield, Oakleigh Chargers star Matt Rowell.

Rowell’s Chargers coach Leigh Clarke yesterday described midfielder Rowell in one word: “Complete.”

A man who has seen Jordan de Goey, Shaun Higgins and Darcy Moore come through at Oakleigh said he was consistently blown away by Rowell’s consistency and will to win.

Sydney stole Isaac Heeney for pick 18 in the 2014 national draft before securing Callum Mills and Nick Blakey as exceptional academy talent.

Rivals would be filthy if Sydney’s one trip down to the bottom of the ladder allowed them to secure a player with such an extraordinary junior resume.

“With his attributes and traits he is as complete as I have seen,” Clarke said. “He just never gets beaten. As a coach you would never doubt him.

There was an interesting article in the herald sun today ( I flick through it at the coffee shop next door to my work while waiting for coffees ) regarding the first contested possession after a stoppage being a big factor in the past 6 premiers success. Teams who win that stat consistently more often than not finish up the ladder or win the flag. We are (I think ) last in that stat this year. Funnily enough George Hewitt is the number ranked player in that statistic. Weird but interesting too.

The reality is that players we still think of as our younger players - the likes of Hewett, Papley, Heeney, Jones, Mills, Aliir - are now the core of our "experienced group" given the list gap in the 26-28 range and the injury to most of our truly experienced players. Beyond the three co-captains and Lloyd, this group is our experienced core, even if we still think of them somewhat as "next-gen" (to steal a word from the headline of the interview with Aliir on the Swans and AFL sites Next-gen Swans must drive cellar-dwellers' rise: Aliir - AFL.com.au )

Fair call, but other footy outlets in Melbourne can jump on the shallow analysis of Swans as well. Murdoch will not be missed. His stable's election coverage has been outrageously biased but looks like failing according to the bookies.
