Our guys missed some very gettable goals. Reid, Buddy, Hayward. Kick a few of those goals and we win the game. We had the opportunities and couldn't get over the line. Pretty gutsy effort to hold on though and, as usual, the defence was under siege a lot.

I hope Hawkins gets a week. If you hit someone in the head intentionally you should get at least 1 week.

Not according to Chris Scott or Mark Robinson.

Absolutely, shouldnt even be questioned. Forearm/fist to the head after taking a mark = 1 week minimum.

If Hawkins hit is classified as intentional he will get a week. And personally I wouldn’t have a problem with that as Hawkins was so late if he was attempting to spoil. But I think it is more likely to be classified as careless, and therefore Hawkins will be fined.

He's been offered a fine. Usual piss weak finding.

It's a weird one. Watching it live (and not seeking out any video until now), I had thought it was just a late arrival at the contest. In that case, "careless" was the classification to be expected. However, the link below provides some clearer, close-up vision and it really was very late. He wasn't in the marking contest. He didn't even try to contest the mark. But then moved in later with a raised arm. It's really hard to know what he thought he was doing.

Big Cat escapes ban for high hit, Hawk and Dog also fined - AFL.com.au

I do think Hawkins has received the rough end of the pineapple at the MRP a few times, being banned for stupidity, but with the relevant clamp down being relaxed almost straight away. A couple of years ago, for example, he was rubbed out for a week for high, off-the ball contact against Rampe but the impact was probably below that necessary for a reportable offence. It was certainly no worse impact than other players were let off for. So if he's got the rub of the green this time, he probably had it due to him.

Do we need a player severely concussed out of the game or worse maimed because someone decides he should do what Hawkins did, before they clamp down on this stuff. I get tired of players getting off for this. Careless....rubbish, it was clearly intentional.

All of these ex players here and overseas with concussion issues for the rest of their lives, yet we still let players get away with it. Ablett is the same. It took 3 weeks for him to be finally rubbed out. These are fellow players, the Players Association is all over the concussion issue and players are suing because of their situations. Hawkins has history, yet is still that dumb that he doesn't get the issue of concussion. Christian said he got a $3000 fine because he had a prior offence. Give me a break.

I've long regarded Hawkins as an opportunistic thug. That was reinforced on the weekend. Weak response from the AFL.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Wow, dem fighting words from a man usually quite circumspect! I’ve always thought Hawkins is just a bit thick. Have I been too kind?

I tend to think that we saw in quick succession, two aspects of one person. That is, in his actions, it seemed like he did want to maliciously inflict some damage, but almost instantaneously, he realised what he did and was genuinely sorry for his actions. Which can happen, if the sections of a person's brain that are responsible for moral reasoning, such as the prefrontal cortex, are not fully engaged and are not effectively inhibiting more primal areas, such as the amygdala. Then once somebody sees the result of their actions, morality can immediately kick back in. And playing a high intensity contact sport, it is more likely that a person will be running largely on instinct. Though of course, people will vary greatly, in their propensity to inflict damage.

Anyway, even though I haven't re-watched the footage, my initial impression, was that his aggression and remorse, were both genuine.

Titus O'Reily's view on the matter.....(before the verdict).

"With Gary Ablett confined to punching and elbowing people off the field this week, it was nice to see Tom Hawkins pay him homage with a weird strike to Jordan Dawson’s head.

Will Hawkins get suspended? Well, given the consistency of the Match Review Officer, he could be offered anything from life in jail to the Nobel Peace Prize."

                          He got the peace prize.....
