I really don't understand the coaching tactics that want all of or mids and defenders to stand back 3-4 metres from their opposition player and let them mark and play on, or handball to another player with no Swan nearby. Then when we do get the ball our immediate reaction is to handball away to another player in a worse position or one that is surrounded by 2-3 opposition players...

Re: handballing to a player under pressure, it seems to be universal. Watching Port v Lions both sides are doing it, often a free player handballing it backwards to a player with 2-3 opponents hanging off them.

I saw Silk do it a couple of weeks ago. A hospital pass as they used to say. From one of the most composed players there is.

I have no explanation for its ubiquity. But it’s not just the Swans who employ such an infuriating tactic.

I sit in the O'Reilly stand with a lot of others that have been members for twenty years plus and every game there are calls of "just kick it". The poor handballs to someone if more trouble than the person giving the handpass is frustrating in the extreme. Also, the kicks across the half back line that get intercepted and give away a goal are another aspect that drives us nuts.
As we were leaving someone behind us said who is the swans skills coach and how much does he get paid? A lot of swans supporters turned around and said it was a good question.
Oh well, Carlton have a lot of high picks and getting rid of a micro manager coach seems to be getting those players to show something. Swans probably about where we deserve to be with our stagnant play, poor skills, and crappy handball. Can at least look to a good draft pick.

My original post should have said it’s not ONLY about technique. You can’t just fix it by practising it. Thinking in particular about Hayward’s ghastly misses this year.

Lockett clearly did not struggle mentally with set shots and had good technique.

M. Lloyd’s long winded technique (set shots) was to slow his pulse rate, worked.
The pulse rate of many players with the Yips (like when I’m putting) must go thru the roof (fear of failure).
I reckon you can tell (many times) if a player taking a set shot will get it or not (stiff with nerves, the way he’s holding the ball, loose limbed, soft hands) and then the last few steps the latter being the most important as per this podcast .

An old technique, especially for straighter shots, was to pick out something or somebody behind the goals.and aim for it. Took the overthinking out of it.

Swirly old day yesterday, had to laugh at the ground announcers "perfect day for footy" when neither cheer squad could raise a banner for the wind.

Not much to cheer about for the Swans. I didn't mind getting a good look at the "new improved" Carlton, they have some big forwards and looked like they meant business from the outset, so not too surprised by the result.

Great to have kick to kick but gee, the SCG make it a typically over-regulated Sydney experience. Someone needs to tell them that it's more fun when they don't rope off half the ground then funnel everyone to an area near the benches for 5 minutes of kicking.

If you recall Lockett and Dunstall's technique; line it up, hold the ball firmly, walk in a straight line and kick straight through the footy. Ben Brown does this with a long run up. Most modern day players spin the ball in their hands almost to the point of dropping the ball onto the foot. That's my theory on the atrocious goal kicking techniques at the moment. Saw some footage of Carey on Bounce tonight and he had the same technique as Lockett and Dunstall. I suspect most players practice, (stuff around at training) doing dribble kicks and shots around their body. Blame the wind all you want, but Hayward's misses the last 2 weeks had a big hand in us losing, and he is a master ball spinner.
Apologies to Peter McKenna who had exactly the same technique as the aforementioned. They probably modelled their style after him.

The key move this year under Worsfold has been the introduction of tagger Dylan Clarke.

Despite injuries, since the youngster was thrown into the middle to combat the likes of Ben Cunnington, Patrick Cripps and Jaeger O’Meara the Bombers are 5-1.

Taking out the opposition’s best mid has created depth and flexibility for the other mids ...

Spent the game wondering when the swans would show up.
Unlike others, I won't blame Horse - he doesn't play.
The only highlight for me was Kizza standing in the goal square on his own and kicking a goal. I don't care who they put there, but there should be someone standing there all game. There's 17 others to flood further up field. So many times the ball came our way and there was no one to kick it to (except me).
Ugh.
Maybe next week. Oh. Wait.

It wasn’t that long ago that Lewis Jetta, a beautiful kick, recorded 19 behinds before his first goal.

You watch Lewis now with WC, and I reckon his kicking is even better than when he was with us. It doesn't matter if
it's just some 15M chip over an opponents head to a teammate, or some 55M laser that never gets more than four
or five metres off the ground, his accuracy is ridiculous. Can we trade him back in? I mean.... Perth.... c'mon.

They truly do have no idea those ground announcers at the best of times. Me and Mrs MCS both giggled when they said that - and she is a Pom that has only been coming to games for a few years!
