If the Swans are serious, they will have a White Ribbon game next year, and every year thereafter.

Haven't we already had one for the last decade? Though White Ribbon doesn't exist anymore, so would have to be a different label. But same concept.

(Not sure that we had one this year, but this year has been weird in many ways. Might have been because the Sydney Derby was played in Perth and hence didn't have the normal level of local promotion. Or might have been because White Ribbon no longer exists, and no clear replacement organisation has emerged to lead on the topic.)

We used to play it against GWS but it stopped.

Might have been because White Ribbon doesn't exist, still wouldn't have thought it too hard to find a replacement. The issue/cause is still there and hasn't gone away!

Elijah has fallen on his sword. Maybe there is something in this behind the AFL scenes, that sees the situation turned into a positive highlighting the offence and Elijah playing on. Appears the AFL space has rallied around the troubled Harley Bennell. He appears in court on December 2 which I suspect is after lists are finalised.

When I heard this about Harley and SEN talking heads saying we should rally around because he has finished playing. I ask the question where were these talking heads when Goodsey was vilified by all and sundry. Certain media people as good as calling him a sook, and the AFL and players association taking an eternity to say anything.

I think after ET is sentenced next week, the club will have to come out and make some announcement about our future plans for him and, if we are keeping him, explain the decision. Whether or not the club says so, if we do choose to keep him, I think it will be about (a) his talent; and (b) also about wanting to support him to come good. I am prepared to accept this if he has shown strong commitment to reforming his ways. Apart from Elijah's youth, Indigenous communities, and many individuals within those communities, deal with disadvantages that the rest of us don't readily understand. Given our clubs decision to invest in him in the first place, and given our connections with Indigenous communities (via Goodesy and Magic), I think we may want to manifest and display an understanding and willingness to work with that disadvantage. I think it's quite likely that we would seek guidance from people like Goodsey, Magic and possibly even Buddy about what to do with ET. I don't think it's an easy decision and I don't pretend to know what we're going to do except that the more time passes the less it seems sure that he is going to be delisted.

If we do keep him, what I do expect the club to say is:

* there will be penalties of some kind beyond his having been stood down for half of the 2020 season
* we recognise that the criminal justice system has dealt with him for his crimes and we are a football club and it is not our function to duplicate that
* some recognition of the harm done to his victim(s) and of the serious issue that DV is
* we think Elijah is remorseful and is committed to changing his ways and can achieve that
* probably also a reference to his youth
* let's support him to be the best that he can be.

After that, if he engages in any further villainy, he'll be gone in a heartbeat.

Ideally they will take us further beyond the surface but I don't expect that of our notoriously superficial offerings to the media. However, more may be revealed by his lawyers in the sentencing hearing and that will likely be reported in the news.

Whilst he has faced disadvantage being indigenous, he has also had a pretty good run of 'advantage' by being a footy player. They may or may not cancel each other out, so I don't think he needs any special treatment because of either.

its a bbq with the swans players and partners attending. its a bbq that has been put on by Luke Parker and his partner.

there are 2 swans players who have recently been charged and found guilty of physical assault.

i wonder how the partners of the swans players would warm to having the two players attend the bbq?

i wonder if this would cause a significant divide amongst partners and players?

i wonder if these two players would be invited at all?

Thanks for this lovely and affirming feedback! Given the time we spend on this site, it's wonderful to feel it's a bit of a community at times.

I read your post BS and totally agree with a lot of the sentiment. It’s a tough one, but ET has shat in the clubs face 3 times now ( I understand there where 2 separate assaults, could be wrong ) and as much as our club has a moral compass, it’s not our issue. It’s the Governments. It’s not up to the swans to try to correct these things, they can barely afford to keep a football club afloat. If you want real change and action on these things then take it up with the federal government. And also, despite his upbringing, ET had a golden opportunity to rise above it, and he didn’t. We can blame it all on his experience as a young indigenous man, but this is not all young indigenous men. Especially ones with great prospects in a good professional system surrounded by good people. There has to be a balance between understanding the history of the person but also allowing for personal responsibility, otherwise every crime, minor or horrific, has a justification in one way or another. I don’t want him to be thrown in jail but I don’t think he deserves another chance on our list. He potentially deserves a chance down the track if he repents and shows he’s learnt from this. But I have to agree with the previous comment as well, it’s never okay to hit or assault a women. Providing any excuses for this does not justice to women who are killed weekly in our country by past or current partners. The previous post from somebody regarding provocation was a disgrace and should be removed from the thread.

This is the post. As a woman, to post what you just posted, is an absolute disgrace re ‘buttons being pushed’. I wonder what button the latest woman to be murdered this week pushed ? Shame on you ! Disgraceful and totally unhelpful in solving the domestic violence issue in our country and around the world!
