Swans chat Impact of Soft Cap reduction - changes to coaching and support staff for 2021

We have a popular Thread on List Management. Perhaps we can have one for the other positions in the club, especially the coaching staff. We can have discussion of the cut and changes of them discussed here.

Just read the News of Steve Johnson leaving us to join GWS. (See Johnson to depart and
    Stevie J Returns to GIANTS)

Heard him a couple of weeks ago on a radio interview that he was not certain if he would continue with the Swans with the uncertainty of the soft cap although he was keen to remain living in Sydney. So it seems likely that it was us being not able to offer him a new contract (or one that he can accept with the terms). So going back to GWS would make sense. Not sure if he has contributed enough to the Swans but apparently, he has good relationship with the players.

According to AFL 2020: Coaching all-rounder, 19 people to save footy, Soft cap cuts, Andrew Mackie, Jarryd Roughead | Fox Sports, with the soft cap cut, we have to welcome the era of the ‘coaching all-rounders’, there will be more Generalists or Multi-taskers than Specialists required. This article mentioned Alex Johnson and McVeigh as examples that can play multiple roles. I think they should have mentioned Cox too. Cox has been the Ruck , Stoppage and mid field coach and Horse's "sounding board" as well as responsible to strategy. Hope that he will stay.

As a matter of fact, unlike Melbourne, talented and experienced coaching staff are always in short demand in Sydney. So lucky for GWS to be able to fill their void with the now experienced Johnson. I doubt if we can pinch any experienced coaching staff from outside Sydney. Again, we have to rely on our ex-players who have not RETURNED to their homes inter-stated. Guess who will take up the role of our forward line coach ? will Kirk have to add this to his existing duties of Development and Runner on match days as well as meditation coach? What will happen to Laidler with no NEFAL next year?

Well, it is really not easy for those who are left to ensure our Team strong, competitive and consistent in the next couple of years!

The players thought he was s$&t and wondered if he would actually start coaching at some point. Big mistake by gws who assume because he is mates with Toby Greene and was a good player he must be a good coach.

I think Stevie returning to GWS is a precursor to him coaching a senior side. He has always been honest about wanting that.

As for Cox. He's going nowhere. Probably going to be our next senior coach.

Why would Laidler not continue in the role he had this year? Our VFL/Eastern Seaboard league team will still need a coach and assistant coach. Development coaches are he and Kirkie.

Good to know. I’ve been a defender of his purely based on his ability to get our forward line scoring with minimal i50s.

        Sounds like I’ve misjudged him!

Where are you getting this information? It is easy just to say things like this. Do you have inside information? Are you connected to the club, by that I mean working or volunteering? I think that unlikely as if so you would not be dissing Stevie as the club definitely has policies around this. Do you know players? Are you related to a player? A coach? Staff at the club?

My point is how are you coming across this information? Declare your source or at least clarify that the source is within the inner circle of the club as that would be the only believable source in this instance. I'm sorry but over the years there have been many things said on social media about situations at the club, including a statement I made about Longmire that was simply observation, that simply were not true or are misconceptions based on flawed evidence. Thank you. I hope you can clarify.

Easy to spread malicious gossip from second hand sources. 99 per cent of it is usually crap.

Doesn't matter to me where he gets his info from. He is usually on the money. Maybe one should ask how come Ugg is first with the team selections.

No way I am revealing my sources. On that basis you are quite fair in calling bs. I don't mind, it's all part of the mix.

                    Hey Barra,

No need to reveal your sources and I for one appreciate you inside information. Keep it up and ignore the negative commentary.

So you obviously know more than GWS about Johnson and their decision to hire him. And they only hired him because he is best mates with Toby Greene? Sorry mate, you've lost me. Deluded rubbish.

Very mixed messages about Johnson. I think there is a general anti-johnson feeling among most swans fans due to numerous incidents during his playing days.
GWS had groomed him for coaching role from the day they brought him in.
Sydney "stole" him when he retired. Maybe the Tom Harley connection brought it about.
                        GWS finally get him back.
He obviously is intending to stay in Sydney (the city).

GWS wanting, losing, and then poaching him back probably speaks louder than some player scuttlebut.

GWS must not have been watching any of our games this year, our fwd line has been just as @@@@ as theirs.

More interested to discuss the future than what Johnson did. With his departure, there can be a few possibilities.
                            1. Not to replace him with any new personnel and have some existing staff to share his duties,
                            2. To get someone who was stood down this year like Tadhg or Perris to come back or
                            3. Get someone new. (Davis who was our goal kicking coach is very happy at the Academy now; Adam Schneider from GWS; ...)
                            4. Not sure how many more games Buddy can still play for us but he is interested in coaching. So perhaps he can act as a player/ volunteer assistant coach for as long as he can. He may need other coaches to help a little but it should not cost us anything in the reduced soft cap. I think it may have a very good prospect.

I think it's entirely possible that there will be people who through their work or connections will be party to what may be called
"inside information" that are also interested enough in footy to be a regular contributor to things like RWO. Sometimes there
will be a crossover of those two things. It's probably not the end of the world. It's up to readers whether they want to believe
what is written of course as it always is.
