2021 trading, drafting and list management: players and personnel
The time for taking Shai Bolton was in the 2016 draft, but we opted for Will Hayward instead. Bolton has turned into a first rate player, but we are well stocked with similar players. Richmond run him through the midfield where he's had a major impact. I would like to see us do the same with a few of our small forwards, but we only get to see Papley there on a few occasions.
Ludwig mate I would have to say that isnt quite true IMHO
Bolton is a level above and it show most weeks
No one is doubting that Bolton is a very good player and I wished we picked him instead of Hayward. It's not often that a small player like Bolton gets to spend so much time as an inside mid. It makes it hard to compare him to similar players.
I think Papley is the best comparison from our list and I Papley would be just as good as a midfielder. It's too close to call who I would rate higher overall, Papley or Bolton.
We also have several good smallish forward mids coming through with Gulden and Campbell.
Every club would love to have Bolton on their list, but at what price? And how bad is the need for such a player? I feel the Swans are very well covered for small forwards with speed, skills and the ability to play through the midfield.
If we are going to hand out lobs of cash, it should be for a KPP. I had Harry Mckay on my radar for a while, but I think now with the year he is having, he will be priced out of our range.
I would keep in check our hopes of landing a top player in the trade market. The timing is just not right. It's better to hold back now and wait until the end of Buddy's contract next year, which should free up plenty of cap space.
We should also keep in mind that we drafted a top key forward in McDonald, so we need to have enough cap space set aside to be sure of retaining him long term. What we need is to find a high quality 2nd key forward. Maybe McLean will be the one. He's on a good trajectory. We are not in a hurry. We still have Buddy and Reid for now. It's a matter of who can partner up for a good combination with McDonald moving into the future. Someone like Reid, but less injury prone, would be fine.
AFL website today reporting that Dawson has yet to re-open negotiations to re-sign with us beyond this season. We cannot afford to lose players like him coming into his prime. Let's hope a deal is done by season's end.

Should be an absolute priority for mine. Even if we have to make hard calls on another player or two as a result.
"You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."
No word on Stephens or Mccartin re-signing either. Wouldnt panic just yet but if we lose any of these 3 while some other plain duds are being signed up on long contracts then our list management people are asleep at the wheel
We definitely don't want to lose McCartin, Dawson or Stephens. And I'll be surprised if we do. They will all be highly prioritised by the club. None of them seem unhappy, although Dawson is a bit enigmatic. I imagine they'll all stay provided they get fair offers which we will surely offer them.
All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)
Yes all three are absolute priorities. Stephens, being in and out of the side this season, probably needs reassurance of his importance to our future. McCartin has been very positive about Sydney and re-signing as recently as one month ago. Surely, Dawson can see how important and valued he is to us?

We also have Parker unsigned as well as Hewett, Ling and Gould. I don't want to lose any of these players (including Gould who hasn't debuted yet).
When asked if there is a bit of a lure to go back to SA, he answered: "Ah no, not at this stage no, nup." Which doesn't eliminate that one day he might but I think his heart is with us for now.
In the case of all three mentioned (McCartin, Stephens and Dawson) I don't think it's that abnormal for them not to have signed a new contract/extension at this stage of the season.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time
