Lance in, and announced by the coach on the Monday prior to the game will have a substantial impact on ticket sales and membership renewals.
Andrew Wu wrote about his impact recently in the SMH and on the win/loss impact as well. When he’s in, the Swans win more games. When he’s out they lose more often. Obviously, but it’s the extent of it.
His effect on membership increase: of course astonishing.
Swans v much need to turn a profit this year after the big loss in 2020.
What a dream start . So exciting .

Don’t know how they will manage the rotations when Buddy may need managed minutes. Looks like he may be rested at goal square for big portions of the match. Or we have a super fit group of teenagers who don’t need as many rotations.

The potential Buddy induced sugar hit to ticket sales and membership renewals, especially among the less bolted-on Swans supporters, will assuredly be welcomed given our financial difficulties.

But as for what we can expect on the field?
I have no idea, will he pay out of his skin in his first game then break down in his second (that seems a common phenomena with old
        er players after a layoff)
Surely the Swans coaching staff will exert sufficient control to avert that?

He can be played out of the goalsquare, but pack marking isn't one of his greatest strengths. And we seem quite blessed with designated kickers at the moment (did everyone else notice Dawson lining up for a ping when the ump called the ball back from Campbell's disallowed goal?).

So just maybe being a Super Decoy might be the best contribution he can make - for at least for the early parts of his season. As Liz says . . . "so long as the rest of the team allows him to become just part of the team, and not The Team."

I heard Dermot Brereton on SEN yesterday say that Buddy has about 30 hours of AFL footy left in him and no use wasting them playing in the VFL, justifying his selection this week. Dermie iterated this 30 hours can easily be spread over 2 seasons. This seems to go in hand with Horse's statement yesterday that Buddy won't be playing every week. It looks like Buddy's game time and matches played is going to be carefully managed from here on.

The rotations are going to be interesting. McLean actually played the second most time on ground last week (92.2% TOG). It is reasonable to expect that Buddy may play somewhere more around the 75% TOG in his first game back. That means that there are quite a few minutes to be absorbed by others. With Parker and Kennedy in our bottom 4 players for TOG%, it is reasonable to suggest that they may spend more time resting forward than on the bench this week.

I have not read anything about how Rowbottom has pulled up after his knee issue from the first game. Hopefully, he will be right to play. I think he is a pretty important player for us these days.

As if Dermie would know anything, a constant source of inane dribble as a commentator.

I trust our medical staff to know exactly what is needed over the next two seasons.

Never underestimate kids but according to the Adelaide media, 10 gamer hasn't shown much McAsey might be recalled to man a KPD post. I'm thinking if delivery forward this week is similar to last week then Buddy could be getting a lot of the ball leading out from the square.

My thoughts are that we may make up to 3 changes for this weekend.

                  Why

                  * Buddy is back on the SCG
                  * We have McInerney, Stephens, Ling, O'Riordan and Haywood ready to go. (or nearly ready to go)
                  * We may need an extra tall in defence to combat Tex and 2 other talls.. = Melican
                  * The new kids probably don't have the tank to play all season and will need to be given rests.. (and yes they are fit enough to play more than one game..)
                  * The ground may be heavy after all the rain and fresh legs will be handy.
                  * I am in favour of having a team with 26 - 30 players who rotate into the best 22 + sub These players would be selected as a best fit for the opposition. (This could allow new players to stay fresh each week, with 3-5 players introduced / rotated each game) Plus Buddy won't play every game so we need to manage expectations

                  Why Not

                  * Stick with winners (+ Buddy = Crowds @ SCG)

                  Who to drop.

                  * All played a part in the win and will be unlucky.
                  * Anyone with injuries (Rowbottom? One week to ensure his knee is ok)
                  * Mclean or Reid

                  Rod

I watched the crows geelong game. The swans can expect a very different game to the one against Brisbane. Brisbane offered very little pressure meaning the swans forward entries were clean and accurate. Also the brisbane defenders were always sagging of behind the swans players allowing gulden and heeney to lead uncontested for the short pass. In short brisbane were awful. Adelaide could not be more different. Manic pressure through the mids and defense. Gang tackling across the ground. Geelongs forward entries were under huge pressure meaning they often were long bombs or missed targets. The brisbane defence played a much closer one on one style, with lots of scragging. Plus they had a plus one tall blocking the space in front of goals. Adelaide then relied on fast slingshot footy caused by turnovers in the backline.

For the swans this is a very different proposition than Brisbane. The game will be more physical and congested. Balls will come to ground more, especially as buddy is not a great pack mark. The swans will need to work hard for their goals and even harder to hold the ball in the forward 50. The mids will be under much more pressure.

                    Should be a great contest.

i agree with Adelaide's manic tackling - they would put even Richmond under the pump. But they are a young side like us, it is a big effort to replicate that effort weekly. As you say, should be a great game particularly as the Great Man is back

Both teams - Adelaide and Swans would have to take the result of the first round with a pinch of salt.
Adelaide came with right attitude, in front of home crowd, they knew their skills would not match so had to compensate by good effort, and eventually good leadership by Tex and Sloane. Geelong did not do too badly in that game and still came close to the eventual total. But they lost because they came with a different mindset and by the time they knew they were being ambushed, it was too far out of reach for them.
Swans in Round 1 - excellent skills on display made easy by a poor attitude and lack of effort by the Brisbane Lions team. Charlie, Hugh, and Lachie Neale were no where to be seen and it was telling in the end. I think we were good but we could display everything so well only because Lions allowed us to.

I reckon we will continue to play that style of footy but it wont be as easy as they seem to be coached better too, but we are better equipped to handle the heat by Adelaide than Geelong due to better and faster kicking skills and we will walk a bit taller now that we would be playing in front of our home crowd with Buddy in the team.

They will come down a notch from that performance. It is hard for any team to give the same effort every game. As always at SCG we have to be better in the center of the ground. Get the center bounce clearance and put in a few goals on Adelaide before they even know what happened.

If Buddy stays well, and we do well against Adelaide and Richmond (Win against Adelaide and hold Richmond accountable) it may give us more confidence and we may end up shaking the competition.

Also Geelong were too predictable with their forward 50 entries and I am hoping we will be a lot smarter than just bombing it to Buddy.

I dont think Rowbottom will be missing this week. He got an injury, but played out the game. If they were at all concerned, they could have called in the sub, and we would still have 22 fit players.

Therefore the injury is not bad enough to warrant missing a week. He's in.

So one change. Buddy in for McClean.

Fox reckons we'll make only one change to the team - Buddy in for McLean. But Adelaide have to cover for two injured defenders: AFL news 2021, AFL teams, team whispers, Team Tips, ins and outs, AFL team news, injuries, Round 2 Team Tips (foxsports.com.au)

Sydney has a huge inclusion on Saturday with Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin confirmed to play. It could be the only change for the Swans given they were mighty impressive over the Lions, with young tall Hayden McLean seemingly the likely omission. With injuries to defenders Luke Brown and Jake Kelly, Adelaide seems likely to blood at least one or both of Nick Murray and Josh Worrell. Murray was added to the list late in the Supplemental Selection Period, while Worrell was a top-30 selection for the club. Chayce Jones and David Mackay will also likely to considered and may be named as the sub.
All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)

Dermot is an expert on husbanding scant resources, he came to the Swans with 30 minutes of good footy left, and when he left and went to Collingwood he still had 30 minutes of good footy left.
Sometimes a marquee player/drawcard provides nothing more than that.
