Let’s be real. Our last draft haul was unprecedented. In no other time in our history have we had three kids come in and immediately become part of our best 18.

They’re not the only ones but they’ve literally transformed this team within moments of making their debuts.

These 3 guys are a mile ahead then most 18yr olds re decision making and skill.

The style of footy we are embracing in 2021 compliments their abilities and vice versa they have added that cherry on top for our ability to execute.

I have been hoping for some time we would add another experienced transition mid that would really add to our depth and decision making but Warner has stepped up tremendously into this role also.

Not sure if these videos of the boys ringing their families have been posted anywhere on RWO - fluked coming across them on Youtube.

Errol Gulden calls his number one supporter ahead of his debut - YouTube

Braeden Campbell calls mum to break the news - YouTube

Logan McDonald calls home ahead of his debut - YouTube

So great to see the boys and their families saying "Love you!"

They all seems like innate competitors and winners. Poise and confidence from the outset. Gulden in particular seems to have incredible high standards and expectations, which I have noticed him apply to more senior teammates.

These qualities really stand out for me, given that we have underperformed in our last two grand finals. It is hard to see those three in particular wilting on the big stage, as they showed yesterday.

I follow the draft a lot and keep track of our draft history, as well as posting often on this history. I have noted how successful our record has been since 2012. I have foreshadowed just how good these 3 players from the last draft would be, but even I have been surprised just how big an impact they have made. McDonald, Campbell and Gulden are exceptional.

A number of players from recent drafts have also made some good progress this season. Put it all together and a picture of why the Swans have jumped the league this year becomes clearer.

Here is a list of the 33 players from the last 9 drafts that are still at the club:

            2012 Cunningham
            2012 Lloyd
            2012 Rampe
            2012 Naismith
            2013 Hewett
            2014 Heeney
            2014 Melican
            2015 Mills
            2015 Dawson
            2015 Papley
            2015 O'Riordan
            2016 Florent
            2016 Hayward
            2016 Ronke
            2016 Fox
            2017 Ling
            2017 McCartin
            2017 Amartey
            2017 Bell
            2018 Blakey
            2018 Rowbottom
            2018 McInerney
            2018 Wicks
            2019 McLean
            2019 Stephens
            2019 Gould
            2019 Warner
            2019 O'Connor
            2020 McDonald
            2020 Campbell
            2020 Gulden
            2020 Carruthers

Changing the subject slightly who do people think will win the rising star Award presuming it's a Sydney player. I would like Gulden to win it but I think because he plays more mid field I think Warner probably will.

Gary Lyon called the award the Swans Rising Star Award.

Sydney probably have 5 players who can win it:

                  Gulden
                  Warner
                  Campbell
                  McDonald
                  Stephens (still eligible)

I think Gulden and Warner are the early favourites. I can see Stephens coming into the team, getting nominated and gathering some votes.

I was catching up on the AFL ACT/NSW podcast with the first episode interviewing ROK. he is now the overseeing all coaching in NSW

He made an interesting comment when asked about the northern academies. He said it was not only providing an elite pathway for young kids in QLD and NSW to play AFL, but he thinks the way it’s structured teaching the basics ground up when the kids are 10 years old or so is superior to the VIC model and that they would soon be copying the Academy model (he was talking about the coaching aspect rather than the alignment with a senior AFL club)

Seeing the skills of guys like Campbell, Gulden and Heeney (that set shot goal around the corner from 40m on his non-preferred - I don’t think many other AFL players could do that) is testament to that.

I think this may be the best draft triplet since 2004 with Hawthorn getting Roughead, Franklin and Lewis. It's looking better than Rozee, Duursma and Butters because of the big key forward Time will tell, but looking good now.

I'm pleased to hear that ROK is back in NSW. He was a true pro and a Swans great. I'm sure that his professionalism will rub off on the coaching set-up in the State.

Our Academy is clearly a pace setter. Has anyone heard Roos interviewed about it in recent times? It would be great to hear his perspective as the founding head. Its been so wildly successful that the jealous Victorian clubs want to remove it now.

It makes me a bit emotional. Who would have thought, 30 years ago, that it would be a Sydney academy that is producing some of the most exciting talent that is now the envy of the league and the Victorians can’t figure out how it happened lol.
