General footy chat NSW Origin lineup

Having a quiet moment at work and started thinking what a NSW / ACT origin side might look like. Well here goes:
    B Cunningham Finlayson Buckley
    HB Cummings Rampe Williams
    C Perryman Mills Smith
    HF Heeney Himmelberg Breust
    F Wicks Walker Marshall
    Foll Witts Steele Hopper
    Res Campbell Gulden Green Blakey
Other players Bruce, Bell, Parks, Flynn, Briggs, Lloyd, Vandenberg

I'm sure there are others but I reckon that team could spring an upset if they were firing.

Matthew Kennedy, Tom Hawkins, Phil Davis, Jacob Koschitzki, Ivan Soldo, Doughal Howard, Thomas Highmore, Jarrad Brander.

It could be even better. Hawkins is no slouch. Nor is Brander or Koschitzki. Howard is a quality backman, so is Davis

Wow, team is looking stronger. It would be interesting to see who would play for NSW versus Victoria. I'd bet Hawkins would go the big V.

He couldn't if it was state of origin. He would have to play for NSW

Ahahaaaha! I thought you were chatting to yourself!

I like the idea of an AFL state of origin series with all states playing each other. Not sure how you could fit it into the schedule though

Years ago there was a gun Allies team made up of players outside of Vic, SA and WA. Buckley was captain and Paul Kelly vice captain..IIRC, Danihers played plus other stars. Beat Vics or WA I think

Pretty sure Horse and Billy Brownless dominated that day.

Got a poster of that NSW team from Terry Daniher years ago (surely the first time 4 brothers played in the same State side)

Thought: Play Origin series carnival every 4 years. AFL rounds reduced to 17 every 4 years to accomodate it (teams play each other once). Could be ideally scheduled mid season. Hopefully the Northern Academies would strengthen the Northern States teams substantially over time.

Would be pretty certain it was the first time.

                          Who else played that day?

State of origin is dead in AFL. Its kind of an odd concept anyway to play for the state where you were when you were 14, rather than one you were born in, or live at. Only the success of rugby league state of origin makes it attractive, but RL SOO is very little about that anymore. It thrives on a tradition of unpredictable and even results from the last 40 years.
AFL state of origin, did make some sense when players from outside victoria had to move to victoria to play. Now, if you like SA that much, you get a transfer to a SA club.

Id favour a representitave comp where its teams from where you are now. Maybe a NSW team made of current day Giants and Swans. Maybe an "Australia" team made of players from all non-vic clubs, against a team made up of players from Vic clubs. But then, if the players dont buy into it, why bother. Nothing worse than the "soft" giggle fests of the last few AFL SOO games.

The argument really is, nobody needs SOO, when you have a healthy national league. We get our fix of NSW (or Sydney) taking on Vic (or Melbourne) most weeks in the H&A.

This is comparable to early State Games between Vic, SA & WA. The Vics tended to dominate those a bit as the the VFL tended to recruit many of the better players from the WAFL & SANFL. Thus they added Origen to the concept so that the elite players from the VFL who were recruited from SA or WA could represent their original state and created a more even playing field.

Your concept pits 2 teams (for either SA, WA, NSW or Qld) against 10 teams (from Vic).

Wasn’t that just the the All Stars vs Vic game of 2020?

The counter argument is a State of Origin pits the absolute best players from a state in a single side as opposed to a handful of good players surrounded by average players. So it’s not even close to comparable.
