I think Reid needs to come in for McLean for a number of reasons.The first is that Reid can fill the need for a tall down back in a way that McLean can't. The second is that McLean can go missing and have no impact, as in the first half this week. The third is that Reid overall is more versatile, being quicker, and having a better ground game.The fourth is that McLean is no good in the wet if it happens to rain.

I'll grant you the first one.

On the second: so can Reid.

Third: don't agree. McLean is ok at ground level, actually not slow. Seems to be move more freely in general.

In addition: McLean offers more pack-splitting threat and power marking in the forward 50 and is thus a more potent foil for Buddy. Much better kick for goal. More likely to run out the game.

Reid is better in the ruck, but Hickey is moving well, so they might not give him as much rest in the finals. So they're going with McLean's superior goalscoring threat and power.

Not sure every team has a 3rd tall/Goliath that Fox couldn’t handle better than Melican. In fact none that we could play do, each have two at best.

Geelong - Rohan
Melbourne - Fritsch
Lions - no real tall 3rd forward
Port - Georgiades
Giants - no real tall 3rd forward

The other option I was thinking about would be to play Reid back. If they don’t feel Fox is part of the team then Reid would add a lot more value than Melican.

The Giants played Hogan, Sproule and Himmelberg, lested between 194 - 197 cm., so that's what we will likely face next week. They usually play Finlayson, but not sure why he was out.

I think this is a pretty good explanation for why we've gone with Melican.

However, while O'Riordan was ok yesterday, I'd rather Fox in that role if I had to choose.

I think Bangalore’s suggestion of playing Mills for half a game (in a elimination final) with the intention of subbing was a not-so-subtle dig at those who ignored calls for chad to play this week. I’m making a few assumptions here as I haven’t read any of the “R23 changes” thread - but I guess that’s how it went.

Having said that, with the benefit of hindsight, I think playing Mills was the wrong call. But that’s just my opinion & like the proverb says, everyone has them.

Need people’s opinion on these three questions:

1) Do people feel that the Swans used the Suns game to give Mills a match simulation fitness test?

2) Do people feel that the Suns organisation was disrespected by the Swans using the Suns game as an opportunity to use a playing spot to conduct a match simulation fitness test for Mills? It was like the Suns didn’t matter and they could afford to conduct the match simulation fitness test.

3) Is using the medical sub position on a player with a suspected pre existing injury using the medical sub position in the right spirit.

These are all questions where I’m looking for many varied opinions.

Based on my chats this morning, millsy was very sore leading into the game and got no better. Not sure about the nuances of why he played by your theory seems pretty reasonable. Overall though the team is very keen to build hardened momentum leading to the first final. The suns game was all about taking the finals side through a hard hit out.

Don’t listen to me. Listen to Gerard Healy. Gerard Healy said that Chad “was a superb young player” today on 7 Mate.

Gerard is an expert observer and you can’t go wrong deferring to his expert opinion. He’s run the couch for years and is a Swans great.

I would say that we all agree with Gerard's assessment of Chad because it's true.....but if you asked him if Chad is ready to play finals next week after so long out of the seniors, he might well give you an answer you don't want to hear.
