Nothing against Corey- hope he turns out to be a champ, but come on- Number 37? Seriously?
I guess they didn't want to keep the number locked away forever, and it didn't turn out especially well when they saved it for Elijah Taylor.

39, 40 and 45 the missing numbers. I wonder why Wicks and McLean decided to move up. Mummy made a career for himself in #41 - you could do worse. Interestingly, by contrast Melican and Lloyd seem happy to stay where they are at #43 and #44.

      34: second player drafted.
      37: third player drafted.
      41: fourth player drafted.

      Last year's recruits:
      6: first player drafted. (McDonald)
      16: second player drafted. (Campbell)
      21: third player drafted. (Gulden)
      31: player traded in. (Hickey)
      33: rookie. (Sheather)
36: player promoted to lower number (Amartey)
      40: rookie. (Carruthers)

So players drafted appear to be assigned vacant numbers in the same order they are drafted.
Canny observation. Plus Stephens #3, Gould #17, Taylor #37. But Chad #2. And before that, Blakey #22, Rowy #8 and McInerney #27. Hmmm. A new policy?

I think player numbers are a part of footy folklore that takes on more significance than it deserves. Elijah Taylor was already given the 37 jumper, so we can say that Corey has taken Elijah's number, if we want view it that way. It's the player, not the number, that's significant. Whoever wears the number 37 in the future will neither add nor detract from Adam's legacy.

Didn't Corey wear that number playing for WA?

It could be a new policy. The chances of vacant numbers being allocated randomly and ending up in the same order as the draft two years in a row is low (a bit less than a 1% probability).

You would think that wearing it also has a little psychological pressure attached as well.
Having said that if he has half the career that Adam had I think we as supporters would be quite happy.
So just one Brownlow for Corey then?

I tend to agree with this view too Ludwig. ET didn't diminish Goodes' legacy one bit because he acted like a tool while wearing his number. Corey needs to write his own story and it happens to start with the number 37. Let's hope it inspires him to great acts, on and off the field.

                  Maybe Goodes gave his blessing?

Agree that 14 and 37 are the two most significant numbers at the club, I suspect that the club ran it past Adam just as a matter of courtesy. Happy for Corey to show he's worthy of the number, which I'm sure he will.

Any news yet on the Warner family moving to Sydney so the two younger brothers can join the academy?

Interesting synergy that Matthew Roberts (SA) inherets No 34 from fellow SA Jordan Dawson. Let's hope he doesn't do a runner if he shows same on field prowess!

100%. What could a kid possibly do to “deserve” the no. 37 before he even gets to the club.

Well he could have got 29 Hewett's old number who was also a South Australian. Numbers are just a number to easily identify a player unlike other codes where they identify a position.

Let us not forget, the club treated #37 with reverence by waiting until and indigenous players with immense talent appeared...Elijah Taylor. Look how he responded.

Perhaps the club has decided that regardless of the number, each players writes his own story.

Roberts will do more justice to the legacy of Troy Luff than other recent ingrates.

Our best player will be in either the 1 , 21 or 27 so not worth bothering over who gets 37 , still should 've been retired though
