Paddy got #39, Grundy's old number. A good choice."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

Caught snippet of an SEN interview this morning discussing who on our list becomes eligible for Free Agency at the end of the year and to my surprise Paddy McCartin was mentioned!!! Surely this can't be right???? Didn't catch name of the interviewee but said Paddy qualified because he's been in AFL system for 8 seasons. Paddy has not been on an AFL list for at least couple of years so how can he qualify for FA? Have the AFL changed Free Agency qualification recently? Though you had to be 8 seasons at the one club? Did not anyone here catch this interview? Making sure i heard right.Comment

I didn't catch the SEN broadcast, but the article on the AFL site stated that Paddy was eligible for free agency at the end of the year. Why would he leave though? We placed faith in him and gave him a second chance when no-one else appeared to be interested. And there is the other little incentive of playing with your brother! I would think he stays.Caught snippet of an SEN interview this morning discussing who on our list becomes eligible for Free Agency at the end of the year and to my surprise Paddy McCartin was mentioned!!! The article also mentioned that Rampe extended his contract by a year. I thought he was out this year and don't recall hearing that coming from the Swans.Comment

Any player who has previously been delisted by any club retains free agency status for the rest of their career. So if McCartin has signed a one year contract and is therefore out of contract at the end of this season, he is a (delisted) free agent.Caught snippet of an SEN interview this morning discussing who on our list becomes eligible for Free Agency at the end of the year and to my surprise Paddy McCartin was mentioned!!! It's really no different from the mechanism that enabled us to sign him in the first place without him having to first go through the draft process.Comment

I wasn't aware of that rule. Thanks for clarifying Liz. As Mark26 pointed out, there's no reason for Paddy to leave at season's end in any case. But he does have that option under current rules.Comment

Thanks for sharing that conversation, BS. Personally, I cannot see all of those guys together in the one backline as we would lose too much run from the back. Our coaching team like to have a lot of running options in defence. Tom is a lock so if Paddy plays too then I think the Pelican misses out or vice versa. Happy to be proven wrong.Returning to Paddy, I managed a snippet of conversation with Tom McCartin. He said he could see a backline featuring himself, Paddy, Rampe and Melican at the same time. Given that I would say Lloyd and Harry C are non-negotiables, can you then fit in Blakey as the 7th? That's a tall backline - although apart from the three keys they are all capable of playing against smaller players. It doesn't omit anyone that is a certain selection - does it? Could that be a R1 backline?Comment

Yeah, I tend to agree with you. Possibly Tom was being diplomatic in not having to vote for either Melican (who was standing next to him) or his brother. Thanks for sharing that conversation, BS. I sadly read that Will Pucofski (exceptionally talented cricketer) has suffered another concussion in his State Cricket comeback. That is concussion number 11.
Pucoski seems to walk in the same concussion shoes as Paddy McCartin.
Would GoSwannies or other medical experts be able to shed some light on how an athlete becomes concussion prone? Is it sheer bad luck or are these concussion prone athletes unable to absorb the enivitable hits that other athletes can absorb without becoming concussed?
Could GoSwannies shed some light on whether being out of elite sport for a period of time has build up McCartins concussion resilience?Comment

Paddy gets compared to Grundy. Swans recruit “the off-season steal of the year”"Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

While I'm pleased that we signed Paddy, a few days after the first practice match, is possibly a bit too early, for King to pronounce him as "the off-season steal of the year". And since we signed him from our VFL team, I could probably quibble about him being labelled a steal.Paddy gets compared to Grundy. Swans recruit “the off-season steal of the year”Comment

What about Jarrod Brander? Another former first round pick picked up basically for free. Didn't he get 5 goals or something in his first game for GWS?Paddy gets compared to Grundy.
