Great work from both Blakey and McInerney in the build up to that lovely goal from McDonald. Blakey is looking well and truly back on the way to the form of his 2nd half of 2022 before he got injured.

Seriously Razor. That was just a good tackle.

A lot to like out of that game today. Apart from some very easy missed shots that really should of seen a lot more comprehensive winning margin, and perhaps some silly free kicks given away at times (mixed in with the usual baffling calls that is part of every game thse days).

But some really good performances across the park - Blakey and McInerney the best 2 on the park for mine, and really solid games from a score of other players. Not convinced entirely North are going to be much chop, although that #1 draft pick looks like he will be a cracker.

Agree 100% mcs abouth Blakey and McInerney - they were both outstanding. McDonald fought on to show a fair bit in the last quarter not sure how he missed that goal though.

Good hit out - not much of an opposition. We will need a big lift to beat GWS.

Not surprising Jmac Chad Gulden thats our next core but might have to add a 4th wheel , Blakey was superb . Mal

Heeney better fwd , dont think we need him in mids if we have the rest

Florent ok today , Dyl excellent , see that sprint from the middle and finds his target inside 50 , reckon he 's the only one who can do that consistently , just needs the chance .

What did i say about Wicks , when his pressure drops away he doesn 't have enough to offer , will get another chance with no Papley but needs to pull his finger out

Terrific across the middle of the ground and flinging off half back. Pat Mc locked himself in for round one. Agree with a couple of others that neither Wicks or Hayward at their best, but despite Logan’s excellent showing, we didn’t have our preferred structure down there so hard to know if that disrupted their roles a bit.

Some selection dilemmas. McLean or Ladhams. How much time forward vs mid does Heeney play with Paps out. There will probably be one unlucky midfielder. Campbell had some nice moments today but is yet guaranteed a spot.

Oh, did I mention my love affair with JMac keeps going.

Did enough to win and always looked in control apart from ten minutes or so after half time.
Lots to like about that performance Stephens looked like he is going to have some impact this year.
Paddy looking at home down back and as mentioned by many looking like the new Grundy.
Justin was everywhere and picked up 30 disposals. Chad and James both had plenty of it and seemed to work well together.
Nick will be a game breaker for us this year and is a player who gets the fans on their feet when he gets some space.
The Mac attacks looked good as well and Hayden should have had four goals. Isaac provided some highlights as well.
Not the strongest of competition but a pretty reasonable effort. Bring on round one.

I thought Rowbottom was superb today. His attack on the footy, clean hands and generally sound disposal in traffic was excellent. Made some really strong tackles too. He wasn't alone with plenty of solid efforts but was very impressed with him today.

I've just realised that we witnessed the full complement of the Macs in today's game, and the season hasn't even started properly. LMac2 was always the one most likely to ruin the hand. Sure, it was an extended bench and not a best available (with Buddy rested) but still, that's one thing ticked off.

A fair amount to be positive about coming out of that game. JMac and Blakey clearly. And PMac was solid. Mills looked decent enough in his first outing. Stevens and Campbell both looked solid and confident at this level, even if neither is yet guaranteed a spot. Florent and Rowbottom were tough right throughout the game, with Rowbottom's tackling and burrowing particularly impressive.

The thing that's buoyed me the most was LMac1. I was a bit frustrated with the way he was used last week but today he got to play as a proper forward. He showed some great signs. And HMac was solid as a second or third banana.

The small and midsized forwards was clearly the area where some improvement is needed (Heeney aside). Hayward had a couple of decent moments but plenty more where he didn't present as he could or should and let his opponent take an uncontested mark. And periods where he was largely unsighted. And yes, Wicks has played much better games than that.

A hilarious statement given we all know who the 4th wheel already is and who performed wonderfully again today.

Agree on Wicks though and good to see Stephens delivering.

                        NB: Compliment included.

The reason I was always high on Stephens, despite his clearly disappointing year in 2021, was what we saw in small patches in his debut season. His ability to make space, a willingness to commit to a contest (despite his then physical limitations), a capacity to turbocharge out of congestion and excellent kicking skills. Plus natural running capacity. They were no more than moments then but they stood out. What we saw today was those attributes over and over again. I appreciate he’s still probably the 19th to 22nd player picked, but I hope like hell he is.

FWIW, I’ve occasionally challenged Florent to do more and been a bit frustrated by him. The game he played today is the one I hope he plays week in, week out.

I didn't think it was part of the 4th wheel comment so I only quoted what was relevant to my response.

It seems many agree with you on Blakey.....sounds like he had a terrific game.

He was superb , havent been his biggest fan in the past , thought he wasnt much and maybe he was out of position , probably a mix of both . Now he is delivering , great attack on the ball and man ,his intensity is so fantastic . i said he is the 4th wheel because i am later getting on his bandwagon than i was with the other 3 but he can be as good as them i say
