I'm not surprised that Hewett is doing so well at Carlton, but it doesn't change the circumstances surrounding why we let him go. He was too expensive to keep in a side that already has an excess of slower inside mids and a game plan that's built for speed. Rowbottom, who effectively takes Hewett's place in the side, is already ahead of Hewett in his development at the same point in their respective careers.
It's sad that a champion player like Kennedy has to go out this way. I noted last year that he was too slow for the current game plan. And now he's become a liability. He's totally off the pace of the game. He should either be the medical sub or traveling emergency.
I would have preferred to drop Kennedy and keep Stephens in the side for this game. That said, Stephens didn't have a good enough game in the VFL to warrant a recall. Both Roberts and Clarke were better in our midfield.
I like McLean's goal kicking accuracy, but think he gives up a bit too much in overall play. I think both McDonald and Amartey are better tall forward options at this time. Hopefully he can improve his athleticism and defensive work. I'm more than happy to have him on our list.
For those who are dissatisfied with both Lloyd and Hayward, consider swapping them. I thought Hayward did well when he was tried in defence. He offers more height and speed than Lloyd in defence, while Lloyd would offer a steady hand on the wing and HFF. He's always been a good decision maker and delivers the ball well into the forward line. With Florent and McInerney getting more time on ball, Lloyd can fill the gap on the outside.
