The Sydney teams may have requested to not have live against the gate free to air TV coverage.?
TV rights deal

That's a good point- but I fear that it also includes non home games ?
I guess we wait and see.
Regarding Kayo- my elderly mother simply doesn't have the technological set up to have Kayo- limited internet access that she simply can't navigate and an old TV that she won't replace.
I'm sad for her because AFL is actually her passion, it keeps her interested in life. I don't know what she'll do without access to it, it would really cause a decline in her quality of life.
I wonder how many other people would be similarly impacted?Comment

Daisi, your mother should be ok in the short term. The current deal runs for another two years, with a new deal to take effect in 2025. So whatever changes might take place they are not immediate.
I understand your concern though. My mother was a sports tragic but gradually lost her sight as she grew old so could no longer watch TV. It took a lot of pleasure out of her life.Comment

From what I understand, the telecast will be delayed so it's not as if people won't be able to watch at all, just not watch live. That's a good point- but I fear that it also includes non home games ?

That’s my understanding as well. It is already like that in Adelaide (and possibly elsewhere). So when Port or Adelaide play at home, their matches can be watched on free TV in Adelaide but with a delayed start time.
You just need to be disciplined enough not to check scores online while the match is underway!Comment

A delayed telecast will rate terribly. You could get away with that before the interwebs, but now, its almost impossible to not know the score in real time.
Delayed telecast = poor ratings = axed.Comment

I agree it's no good for the majority, I was more letting Daisi know that her elderly mother without internet and old TV will not have to miss the game, just not see it live.Comment
-
I agree, and for Daisi's mum its ok. But I just think that if you play it through, the delayed replay will be axed within 2 years of the deal. No one will watch it (except Daisi's mum). TV networks arent charities.
So a vote for a delayed telecast, is really a vote for no telecast.Comment

An hour delay is not too bad for live sport in your resident city (as opposed to a 10pm showing for a 2pm match). I can understand it from the perspective of trying to drive up attendance at a match (like the blackout rules that still apply to sport in a U.S. city when their stadium doesn't sell out). However, it is a bit strange if the decision is made by the broadcaster considering the number of digital channels that they could use (surely they are not that concerned by the ratings on their third string channel?).Comment

I’d take a delayed telecast over no telecast
Adelaide show stuff all Swans games free to air
You either need Fox or Kayo for a decent season.
I do like that the AFL streams the VFL games.
And with regard to watching on delay and avoiding scores, I work weekends. So if there is an arvo game, I message all friends and family to tell them I won’t be watching it until either I get home (if I recorded it) or the next day if it’s a Fox replay. I take the Schrödinger‘s Cat approach … the result isn’t determined until I’ve watched the game. goswannette, however, usually sees the score on FB and to her once a game is played, that’s it. It was a task to get her to watch the 2005 grand final (even though that was before she was a Swans supporter! A life education that she needed to have! I’ll educate gocygnet better!)Comment

I often watch a game on delay as none of my friends care for football. I try not to let a game stop me from being social. I take the same approach in avoiding the scores (can sometimes be impossible) and watch a replay as if I'm watching it live. Works most of the time!I’d take a delayed telecast over no telecast

Maybe the AFL can invest some of this broadcast rights money in trying to improve the so called "technology" involved in the goal
review system. They could start by buying some cameras that are better than the one I got for my 12th birthday that I think
they are currently using.Comment

While I sympathise with those in NSW and Qld that have had free live coverage of the Swans games for years, those of us Swans' supporters in Melbourne, of which there are still plenty, have been paying for Foxtel or Kayo for years.
Most AFL followers down here recognise that this is the only way to be sure that you can see your team play every week. Pay per view has become the norm globally whether we like it or not.Comment

I grew up in an era where there was no live footy except for the GF (from 1977 onwards). Ch 7 showed last quarter replays of 2 matches each Saturday night, which we were lucky to appear twice a year as Collingwood matches were shown almost every week without fail. There was great fear back then of telecasting games live against the gate. How times have changed!!!Comment
