all elementary though as we didnt have this talent available to move to Sydney coming into 2023.......such is life and competing against the Melbourne move across town adv

I'm not sure the maths is quite that unitary, but that's not realy the bit I didn't understand. If we had the funds, why didn't we go into the market?

My best guess was that what we felt we needed we could not attract to Sydney via a trade...........and or we ere not willing to give up much to make it happen if there was a player or two we wanted?

I mean the exchange in the trades for Patch and Grundy was all time for us given their ability and experience.

In the end we limped into 2023 final series. Great effort considering injuries. Young guys got more experience. We got what we wanted re key roles for 2024 season. Plus our drafting of Green, Cleary, Snell and maybe even Kirk is a very good haul alongside Grundy, Patch, JJ and Hamling.

He goes out of his way to give a good rap to JJ. Stating that he was at the front of the pack for the 2km time trial.....which was awesome..... but alluded to him being a great acquisition for the Swans.

One other possibility - was that while the one year Buddy contact was moderate, earlier years were less so.
So we may have had to rejigg some player payments into the 2023 season.
Which may have meant we didn't have the TPP space that you have identified.

I made a few guesses on jumper numbers that were not too far wrong. Most were more fanciful given the decision to give 23 a rest instead of giving it to Jordon.

3 - Adams. tick.
4 - Grundy - tick.
12 - my guess was "a midfielder". Sheldrick got this number instead of Cleary. Good choice, and Sheldrick is very happy with it.
17 - Jordon - I expected Jordon to get 23.
(23) - Not assigned next season.
29 - Hamling.
31 - Indhi Kirk. No surprises there.
33 - Cleary.
39 - Buller. I speculated that Buller may want a new number (47 is a "we had nothing else lower" number) so I'm not surprised he opted to switch. My guess was 40.
(40) - Not assigned.
41 - Snell.
45 - Green.

Once numbers get into the 40s they are usually less popular. They are typically a "wait for something better" number rather than a permanent choice. A few players have long careers with numbers in the 40s (Lloyd, Nick Smith) but these are the exception rather than the rule. Mostly these are "rookie" numbers. I expect Fox is happy holding onto 42 though.

Highest number on the list is 46 (McAndrew) so we have 44 listed players.

Just cause Buddy halved his contract in 2023 minimum……does not automatically mean we have the other half for another new trade

Maybe we decided to increase payments to a few key other players to level out future years

And or we do have 22 players unsigned end of 2024 so big juggle and maybe a pre juggle ?

I suppose going after Naughton (confirmed by KB) @ $1m pa ish was a curve ball hard to configure in amongst everything has happened with a big budget in trades

I think a number of players are more highly rated internally than the rating by fans on chat sites.

Sheldrick is obviously held in high regard to be given the number 12 guernsey and I for one am looking forward to seeing a fit Sheldrick in action next season.

Last year before the season started, Tom Harley came out and stated that the priority for 2023 was to resign the emerging young talent on the list, and wait until 2024 once they had a better read on the salary cap situation going forward, to move into the transfer/free agency market.
There was a danger that if they went heavily into the transfer market it could have a negative effect on players who were yet to renew their contracts.
What the club hadn’t countered on was the incredible injury list that seriously exposed our depth, and in hindsight, given the age demographic of our list, there was a gap in the middle aged player group that became apparent.
Having said that I think we should all be delighted with the way the club has responded this year.

Well I’m not one on here to underrate him. Sheldrick is going to be a gun and (if injury free) easily makes my best 22 from round 1.
